Can anyone tell me how to send a text message from a computer email account? I've heard its possible but when I tried the method turned up by google it didn't work.

I tried sending my email to XXXXXXXXX@vtext.com

Where the XXX was my wifes 10 digit cell phone number.

You are correct. The format for VZW email to text is your 10 digit mobile number@vtext.com "XXXXXXXXXX@vtext.com."

Can your wife receive text messages normally otherwise? There are Spam Controls at vtext.com that can prevent incoming text messages from email and web addresses.

Go to vtext.com and sign in with her username and password. Your My Verizon username and password will work here if you've already registered, otherwise you will need to register. Click on Spam Controls and the the link for Internet Spam Blocking and make sure the boxes beside block all messages from email and web are unchecked and hit the apply button to save your changes.

You can also set up a special nickname for vtext.com under the Preferences. For example, I could make mine cstrait001@vtext.com

Just to add to the excellent advice already given by cstrait, if you have an attached photo or sound file, you can send to XXXXXXXXXX@vzwpix.com ; the vtext.com is for text only. There also may be an issue if the message is sent as html or with rich formatting rather than plain text.

If you are sending to a cell phone OTHER than Verizon, the email address will be different - the vtext and vzwpix email addresses only work for Verizon cell phone numbers. Here is a list of other carrier's emails:
