can u turn off automatic updates coming in on the droid, but still also user internet traffic?

I am trying to see if my daughter is using the internet after hours, possibly to email her boyfriend.  I can't tell because the data usage file is full of updates coming in.   Is there a way to stop ALL updates for a period of time and just view data usage used by the phone user herself.  thanks

There's not way to cut off 3G network unless you call every night to block it.  Even then, she wouldn't be able to send emails even if she wanted to.
