International phone usage

Current situation: we just moved to Europe and we are returning to the US in a few years. I added the international plan. It is very expensive and I am looking for a way to keep the cost down while keeping the same number.

I have a local cell phone and wifi, so all I need is occasionally receive texts and phone calls. Is there a way to switch to a lower payment plan or prepaid and use it on airplane mode? Can I still receive texts that way?

Yes to both of your questions. I would like to keep it active while we are away. Also I will be visiting the US annually.

I have 2 phones and the usage is rather minimal. A few texts if any daily, and maybe less than 30 min calls monthly. No data usage needed.
