how to prevent an expiring lease on static ip address

Question

i  have set up port forwarding on a remote computer on Fios using the MI424WR-GEN3I Actiontec Router.

I  will remote into this computer regularly, but sometimes the PC is in sleep mode.  I have set up WOL, but if the lease on the IP has expired it will not forward my wake up call to the PC.  The ip is set up as a static address, but the lease expires every 24 hours. If the PC is in sleep mode it will not renew the lease and then i cant wake up the PC.

i have the DHCP range set up from 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.200.  and I have assigned 192.168.1.201 to the PC. But after 24 hours when the lease still expires.  I would think since it's set up as static it would ignore the lease or just know to reassign the same IP.  I've tried assigning the ip address 192.168.1.201 to the specific ethernet adapter on the PC too.  still after 24 hours, lease expires and i cant WOL.

As a workaround I increased the lease time to the maximum minutes which is 30 days, but it is not ideal.

Any suggestions on how to get this working properly?

Welcome to the forums.  You're mostly talking to other customers here.

The Actiontec MI424WR-GEN3I has been end-of-life and end-of-support for many years now.  I consider it a security risk as it hasn't received security updates in years.  You should remove it from service as soon as possible.

Depending on your plan, you may be eligible for a free router upgrade from Verizon.  You'll need to contact them to know for sure.

If you can't get a free router from Verizon, you can purchase or rent a new one from them.  You can also buy used Verizon routers from various online sources.  The G1100 is the oldest and cheapest used Verizon router that is still supported, however it may go out of support soon.  The G3100 is the next oldest model, and used units can be found for a reasonable cost.

If you don't have Verizon TV with their set-top-boxes, and if you have an Ethernet WAN link between the ONT and router, you can use any router you like.  Verizon won't support non-Verizon routers, but many folk do this to get routers with features they like.

As for your question, you've configured a static lease,  not a static IP.   I don't remember if the Actiontecs supported static IP addresses, as I haven't had one in many years.  The G1100 and newer routers do.  That should solve your problem.
