Cannot Receive Short Code Text Messages

I am not able to receive "short code" text messages on my iPhone 14 Pro. These are apparently used to send verification codes to access sites like Google, banks, etc. I upgraded to IOS 17.3.1 and still cannot receive them. This is preventing me from receiving verification texts from various sources and completing 2 step verifications. Called Verizon Tech Support and no help. Any ideas as to how to rectify this? I don't seem to be able to receive any. My wife receives them from Google but not from any other site.
