Kyocera C6930 Wireless Android Auto broke with March 2024 update

2021 Chevy Blazer, Kyocera DuraSport 5G UW.

Wireless AA worked fine for the last year until the latest update. Now the wifi tries repetedly to connect, disconnect, connect, disconnect.... And it seems that after this goes on, the phone is messed up until I reboot it. By messed up, I mean the touch screen doesn't respond half the time, and some things happen without touching the screen. im my attempts to troubleshoot, I noticed that the phone will try to connect to the car even though I have wifi turned off. And the phone's wifi will turn itself back on even though I have all the options ticked to not allow that. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the "March 6 update" club. All of us with this model seem to be suffering a very wide range of malfunctions from annoying to infuriating. I have been back and forth with both Verizon and Kyocera for a week now. Both seem to think it is an isolated issue. Personally, I think they are trying to force us to upgrade.

I believe to get their attention, after seven phone calls, a new phone and a visit to a corporate store. I will be creating a YouTube video. Verizon wireless sent. The update stated that they tested the update and yet two phones have the same problem

Please make sure you show the comments on the numerous threads here. Kyocera is of no help either. I had a VZ rep tell me to contact them directly and factory reset my phone.

I'm seriously thinking about taking my son's old unlocked Samsung and switching service providers.

I'm having the similar problems. Apps keep switching on there own. The key board wont Stay up or won't come up all.

I can't talk on the phone and use any other app at the same time. Phone it totally screwed up. This has all happened since the last system update a week or so ago. I tried to do the network reset but it didn't help. Also it keeps turning on my hotspot on it's own.

I've also noticed now that Strava won't record a workout, the keyboard likes to not open up and close itself randomly, and apps will randomly close while I'm using them.

I know how important it is to be hands free and have a device that works well with my car, and I know this would raise some concerns for me. The great news is that we are here to help! I was unable to get Android Auto to work in safe mode. I was also unable to get it to work with a USB cable instead of wireless!

There isn't much to test in Safe Mode. All the apps that I have been experiencing problems with aren't available. Message Plus is be the only app available and it would be the disappearing keyboard I'd be looking for. Short test of that didn't manifest anything. The problem with the keyboard and apps closing seems to be sporadic though.

A factory reset is a big ask. I've already spent too many hours troubleshooting this problem that is CLEARLY the result of the March update to the phone. How is Verizon not responsible for this? I bought the phone from Verizon and Verizon pushed the flawed update. Verizon is who should be contacting Kyocera to find a solution. Verizon has made my working device almost completely unusable. I cannot record a workout in Strava anymore. I cannot use Android Auto at all. The whole reason I upgraded to this phone from the previous one is because the old phone didn't support Android Auto. Trying to type anything is frustrating because the keyboard may pop up and will randomly close while I am typing. Apps will close randomly while trying to use them. Verizon is responsible to remedy this problem and should either fix the update, back off the update, or buy my phone back so I can get one that works.

This is ridiculous that Verizon is playing the pointing fingers game with Kyocera right now and Kyocera is doing the same.

They either need to be refunding all those affected by this or be replacing our phones that were WORKING PERFECTLY FINE before this stupid update. It's fine, they want to play games....we can play games...

Sd1973, we understand how concerning it is when your device is not working as expected, especially after a recent update to your device. Are you experiencing any other issues with your device other than with apps and games? Has any troubleshooting been completed on the device? I did a factory reset and tested as I added back only the necessary apps. The phone does still act up, but appears that the more I install, the worse it behaves. Anyway, Kyocera is sending an advanced replacement phone with the old software and is apparently no longer pushing the update. Question: Will Verizon charge me to activate the replacement phone? And,does anyone know how to restore a phone from the google backup? I'd like to restore when I get the replacement phone. Is it just a question during the initial setup?

Hello mjcandalor, first of all we're sorry for all the issues you have encountered. You don't get charged any activation fee for changing your device. The only time you get charged an activation fee is if you add a new line and we activate it on our system, since this is already an existing line you can change equipment without an issue. If you upgrade or get a new device through us, then you would be charged a fee. We hope this clarifies your concerns.

I don't think I will be able to restore from google backup. Google says you can't restore from a newer version of android to an older version. And that is exactly what I will be doing.

Ive also had tons of problems since the update. Mine primarily is the bluetooth has gone haywire. Connects/disconnects constantly.

I'm so sorry you are having bluetooth issues, trompna. Was this with all bluetooth devices? What troubleshooting have you tried? -Joe

Well apparently a new update is available. I had gotten a replacement phone without the March update. Supposedly this new update fixes the issues from March.... I'm skeptical. Has anyone tried it yet?

The update automatically installs when you reboot so I didn't really have a choice. I was running 1.412VZ after Kyocera replaced my phone. The May update (3.100VZ) does not seem to have the issues seen in the March update (3.043VZ).

However... my phone seems to have stopped reading QR codes. I haven't done much to debug this yet. I wonder if anyone else has seen the same behavior.

I was forced into the update and it's still buggy. Just had to force reset the thing because it locked up completely.

The new update appeared to be working --apps didn't close while using them, keyboard stays up when using...

However, Android Auto disconnects and struggles with GPS. It seems the GPS issues happen when cell service is lost. And Strava disappears during a workout and appears later saying it recovered from a serious error.

Yes, the QR-codes were enabled both before and after the update.

The issue seems to have been transient as today I have no trouble reading codes using the Camera App and from other Apps.

I'll report back here if the problem returns.

We're sorry to read that the update did not fix the issue with the device. Updates are done by the manufacturer and are released when finalized. Please reach out to the manufacturer if you're still having issues with the software. ~Peter

The update is definitely an improvement, however I'm still having the same issues as I had with the March update, to a lesser degree. Apps just randomly stop while I'm using them (YouTube stops playing, PodcastAddict stops playing, navigation in Android Auto just randomly drops and comes back). I didn't have any of these issues on the old version prior to either udpate. I'll be contacting Kyocera again. And starting to look for a replacement. This is ridiculous. @Anonymous
: I recognize this is mostly a Kyocera issue, but this isn't a good look for you either, given your name is all over this thing. Just some basic testing should reveal these issues. Please try to do better. We spend a lot of money on these things and it hurts (I used stronger words but it blocked them...) to have them break just by getting an update.
