Wrong IP address on 5G Home Internet router

My Verizon 5G Home Internet router came pre-programmed with a Louisiana IP address and I live in Alabama. It wouldn’t be a problem except that live streaming tv gets messed up (news and weather) because of the confused location on YouTube TV. I can fix it temporarily but YouTube TV wants to eventually change the location back to match the router’s IP. It would be best to just change the IP but I don’t know how to do that. AT&T can’t help me (I’ve tried) - can anyone else?

I have the same issue but it doesn't have a practical impact in on me. I'm not aware of any solutions that would be short of a three-ring VPN circus to correct the issue (not likely feasible). However, here is why I think we're both experiencing this:

The IP address typically changes every time you reboot the Verizon 5G router. The issue is that the owner of the block of IP addresses (Verizon) has identified the geographic location for the range they are issuing to a different location. It's probably accurate for their network but obviously not for where you and I live. Verizon would be the appropriate people to make any changes related to the geolocation associated with their IP addresses.

I'm speculating but I think part of the issue may be that we live areas that are not also served by Verizon Fios (it's not available here). It appears the Verizon 5G Home Internet network is pushing us out to the Internet through a route that travels on the Verizon Fios network, and that "out point" is likely in another city and state where Verizon Fios service exists.

I know you said Verizon can't help you and this is a semi-common issue that comes up in this community. Unfortunately, Verizon would be the only folks to help directly solve the problem. Otherwise, you could try to find a VPN provider that provides "out points" to the Internet in your state, but I'm not personally aware of a VPN provider that provides state-level options here in the US.

I'm curious if you found a VPN solution to fix this issue. I am having this same problem. Another user posted a similar thing on this forum (see "Local channels broadcasting from different county" 5-27-2024) and there was an excellent reply on how/why this is happening. I'm including my reply to that user here because I'm interested in finding out if there is a solution to this problem.

My reply: This is a very good explanation of what is happening. However, it is not limited to multi-county and can be multi-state. I live in western Montana and my IP address keeps reverting to Denver, Colorado. This is extremely annoying and inconvenient. When I shop online, it may default to a Denver retail store but it's usually not terribly hard or time-consuming to change it to the retailer's store closer to me in Montana. Where it gets especially frustrating is when I turn on my TV expecting to watch a show on YouTube Live TV on a local channel. My local channels are constantly reverting to Denver and then I get a playback error if I try to watch that channel. Then it takes at least 5 to 10 minutes and jumping through a lot of hoops to fix this, during which time I've missed the first 10 minutes of the show I wanted to watch. This can happen daily. Verizon says it's not their problem and YouTube says it's not their problem. I understand why YouTube Live TV does this - in its settings my Home Area is always correct but the Current Playback Area relies on the geolocation of the IP address and constantly changes back to Denver. How hard can it be for Verizon to assign IP blocks that geolocate correctly? The part that really upsets me is that when I chatted with Verizon they insisted their service was working correctly and when I requested this problem be escalated, they replied that they would not do this because they don't have an escalation process. That's unacceptable customer service. Needless to say, I'm about ready to dump Verizon Home Internet. I'm curious if lots of people are having this same problem, and if so why I'm not hearing an uproar about it or why Verizon isn't losing lots of customers over it.

This is exactly my problem! I guess Verizon just doesn’t get it and we have to suffer. It appears that the only solution is to find another solution. Thanks so much for the help!

We're sorry to read about the concern with the location on you 5G Home service. Streaming TV providers like Youtube TV and Hulu should be contacted so they can manually set your location. I've had both services and was able to fix the issue with local programming by speaking to each provider directly, and it was a one time change on their end. Please contact them for assistance. ~Peter

Peter - speaking to someone directly at YouTubeTV is about as easy as speaking directly to someone at Verizon - no thanks. I’ll just continue to reset my location manually until you guys can figure out how to give me a local ip address, or I can find something better.

I contacted Hulu. They can reset the address they consider to be your home, but as the IP address will continue to change this is not a permanent solution. They told me to contact Verizon and see if I could get a static IP address. Sounds like the answer to that is no. I guess for all of us, as this does affect a lot of people, the solution is going to be to dump our Verizon 5G internet and go to something that will actually work for us. Maybe that will get Verizon's attention and they'll decide they can, indeed solve this problem.

Every time I have a power surge or outage, I have to call Hulu to have them manually reset my home location. I have connected my Verizon router to a battery backup, and still have the problem of having to reset my home by talking to Hulu. This is becoming g very annoying and I'm getting to the point where I'm getting very close to canceling Verizon 5g internet and I've only had it a few months.

This is not helpful. They reset our location manually, but then the dynamic IP address just changes again, the provider notices and blocks access again.

I have had HuluTV for 2 months and am already out of location changes. I have to call every single time there is an issue. Verizon needs to fix this or I am going to go to my state consumer protections bureau and post a complaint

Try this:

Follow this link and follow the instructions to get to your Admin page: https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-301456/

Once in the Admin page, click on IPv4 Address Distribution, then click "Connection List".

Once you're in the DHCP connections list, locate the device you wish to edit and click "Edit" on the right side.

Click in the box for "Static Lease Type"

And you're done! You can check it with Google Maps or anything else that uses location services.

hello, you are exactly correct we have the same issue and its getting worse each month! after 27 years we are leaving Verizon too! incredibly sick and tired of no accountability pointing fingers and we suffer! Hulu is losing customers because customers do not understand its Verizon who assigns IP's each time the power goes out, or the router crashes, they move us to another tower, they update software, hardware issues, ect. the list goes on and on ... we have been with Verizon 5G home for over a year and we already had 3 wifi boxes replaced which is a nightmare too! Also there are very few true 5G wifi capable towers across out state of FL. We're DONE!

I have the exact same issue -I live in western Montana but get nothing but Denver channels across all apps (YouTube, Paramount, Peacock, etc.). It's so frustrating. Denver isn't even the closest "major" city. Why not Spokane or SLC or Seattle? Verizon will never accept any accountability because this is all by design. Montana as a market is too small for them to care about. I'm not sure if T-Mobile or Spectrum are any better. We're just too small for any of these big companies to care about.

I don't see how this changes the location to what is actually local. I'm in North Louisiana (Monroe), but Verizon's 5G service (Home or phone) have me in North Richland Hills, TX. Changing to a static IP address on this side of the Verizon 5G router does not change my location on the Verizon network. Unless I'm not understanding something, I need the Verizon router to change its location to where I am, and I really do think that is something Verizon would have to do. Contacting different services to get them to manually set my location, only to have it change when the Verizon dynamic IP changes, is not a solution. This is a long-running issue that would really benefit from someone at Verizon taking a serious look at to resolve. I would think if other companies can do it, so can Verizon.

I did try it, but it did not resolve the issue. Assigning a static IP on the inside does not do anything for the dynamic IP on the outside. I'm still incorrectly identified as being in another state from where I actually have service. I have the same issue on my phone that is now on 5G. I did not have this issue on my phone on the 4G LTE network (and obviously didn't have home Internet until 5G came out).

I have the same issue. Geolocation shows Atlanta but I live in Savannah (4 hours away). Verizon can't seem to fix it and I am ready to dump them as well
