The external screen will not activate when the volume control is pressed.
If the volume button is how you typically turn the screen on and it's now unresponsive, I'm calling that a hardware failure.

Phone was activated at the store. Additionally the silent and vibrate modes are not indicated on the screen when activated, and the phone randomly re-starts.
