“New” Series 9 Apple Watch already has Apple ID on it

I just bought what I thought was a new Series 9 Apple Watch from the Verizon app as a gift for my boyfriend, when he was setting it up he got a notification saying that another Apple ID was connected to the watch and they could see the watches location, should I take it to a store and ask them what’s going on? I see this has happened a lot in the past with Verizon.

elliecxmmings, we'd be happy to shed some light on your questions regarding your boyfriend's Apple Watch. Please tell us, does your boyfriend have more than one Apple ID? If the device was linked to someone else's Apple ID, it would not have been possible to sign in without that user's password. To clarify, was he able to fully set up the device and activate it?
