New account setup

Just signed up for a new VZW account this morning with several lines, taking advantage of their Black Friday deal. A few minutes ago I received an automated call claiming to be from Verizon asking for a PIN. It didn't sound legit, so I didn't respond. My wife received the same call at the same time.

Is this legit? I already provided a PIN when I signed up, in addition to the PIN required for my old provider to transfer the lines. If it's legit, what number should I call to provide the PIN?

As an aside, a calling company should never ask for a PIN. This is rife for abuse.

Hello, HumidFrog. Help is here. This is very alarming to hear that someone contacted you asking for the PIN. This typically something we would never ask for as we have noninvasive ways to authenticate your account. Also, for customer service needs, we typically don't contact you as it would be the customer contacting us. The safety and security of your account is always of utmost importance to us. May I ask, what was the nature of the call that you receive? Has there been any changes to your account since the call?

(Couldn't figure out how to log in to the account I originally posted this with, but apparently I already had a different account, thus the different user names)

Well, it turns out it was legitimate (every phone on my account got the same call), as I found Verizon's "check port status" website, and saw a message that they had the incorrect PIN for the transfer from my old provider. I provided the correct PIN online and transfers were able to go through.

However, it's still a concern that they would ask me for any PIN on an incoming call; they should instead instruct you how to enter the pin correctly on the website or via calling in.
