Using G3100 Router with third-party modem

Hello,

We currently have Verizon Fios with the G3100 router that we owned. We are moving to a new place that no longer supports where any Verizon option is no longer available. As a result, we are looking at other ISPs to provide internet for us.

We realize that we would like to purchase our own modem that our new ISP will support, and we were wondering if the G3100 router would be compatible with a different modem? We are looking to use the Arris S33 modem and use our G3100 router by connecting to it.

We are relatively new to home networking, and we are just curious if the G3100 router can function as a router outside of the Verizon Fios service. Thank you for the help.

Sorry to hear you are moving out of the Fios area, but yes, the G3100 is a router and will behave like one. So long as your cable ISP has no issue with using your own router, you should be good. It should be as simple as connecting the Ethernet port on the Arris S33 to the WAN port on the G3100. (Be careful not to plug into one of the LAN ports accidentally.)

You would still access and set it up using the same IP address. (https://192.168.1.1) I have a G3100 I use for testing, and when I am using it, I connect it behind my router using an Ethernet cable from a switch. On the LAN side, you would connect the G3100 to whatever switches or devices you had connected to it before.
