How can I upgrade circumventing that ridiculously huge fee
I'd have to guess your current phone is tied to some kind of contract where upgrading the phone means you'd have to pay off the old one. Can't see a way out of it unless you finance the S24 somewhere outside of Verizon and get a different number on the S24.
No action with Trade in 36 months contract.
