I am wanting to switch to another phone an my upgrade isnt up for another year, can I buy a phone elsewhere and switch it with my current phone as long as it is compatible with my plan?
Sure you can. Just make sure that the phone you buy has a clear ESN (has not been reported as a lost or stolen phone) and that it is compatible with Verizon's network (has a Verizon logo on the phone). When you get the new (used, whatever) phone, you can activate it by:
1. Dial *228 and choose option 3 on the new phone, with your old phone turned OFF. This is the easiest way, but if anything isn't right, the process will tell you to call Customer Service to activate the phone.
2. Call Customer service 800-922-0204 from a landline or other phone, and follow the prompts to activate your phone.
3. Go online to your account at MyVerizon and choose the option on the right hand side to "Activate my phone".
