Prepaid to post: briefly switch carriers for online only deals?

Hi - I want to switch to a post-paid plan, and there are some nice online only deals. But it seems like I have to call the sales department or go to a store to switch.

Am I better off just briefly switching carriers then coming back to verizon fresh?

I have a solution for you. First activate a new line of service with a post paid with whatever promotion you loved with a new line and new number. Second Once you have your new phone and number in hand contact porting (Activations) and we transfer your prepaid number over to the new phone (deleting the new number). This practice is done often. Thank you for your loyalty.

I thought promotions were tied to the phone number you start with. So, if someone were to open a new postpaid line with some promotion - be it a device deal, trade-in, discounted pricing, or what have you - if they then change the phone number on this line, won't that be considered breaking the contract??? Then all the bill credits or whatever would stop, and the customer might even be forced to pay early termination penalties, or have to immediately pay the entire remaining balance on their device. Please advise.

There's a pretty nice local deal where I live, which is offering a new line of Unlimited Welcome for $20 less/month for new customers, but I'm frankly afraid to convert my prepaid line to postpaid to try to get this offer, because I very strongly suspect I will not qualify, and doing the "new number" thing would mean getting a new phone number, which I really don't want to do either.

Hi, I've read elsewhere in the forums that you can no longer go to a Verizon store to convert your line from prepaid to postpaid, or vice versa. Inside Sales at 800-256-4646 is the department to contact about this type of account conversion. As for whether or not you'd qualify for an online promotion, that would depend on if the promotion is available to existing customers. If it is only for new customers, then I'd have to think you wouldn't qualify.
