Are you a new customer, or was your number transferred to you from a group or business account? There seem to be some issues lately with Transfers of Service where people have been reporting that they can't link their supposed-to-be-independent number after a line transfer.
If you are a new customer, then I suspect you have a guest My Verizon account instead of an actual one. This occurs if you try to register too soon, before your service was active, or maybe if the system just hadn't gotten updated yet to show you're now a customer. If the login URL has "guest" in it anywhere, or you're seeing a message saying something like "You'll get the full Account Owner experience when your [something] is active", then you have a guest account. The fix for that is to try registering for a My Verizon account again as if you'd never done it before (see link below for more details):

If the system refuses to let you register, then someone at Verizon will have to delete your current My Verizon account and then you can start over.
