As I write this I’m on my 8th call in a few days to resolve the issue of the disappearing military discount.
Verizon claims to offer 15 percent to military, first responders and others with a designated status. According to the app and website, status for the discount purportedly needs only one verification and applies to account holders overall bill indefinitely.
I verified my military soon after I opened my account in 2006.
Without my knowledge or consent, the discount was removed and as such I’ve been paying the full amount of my bill for 20 years.
So let’s do the math: a bill averaging about $200 each month, at about $2400 each year multiplied by 20 years is $48000.
So 15 percent of that figure is $7200.
I have been transferred to multiple departments, most of them to call centers overseas, and each supervisor I managed to reach has hung up on me or mysteriously disconnected.
I’m trying to give Verizon the benefit of the doubt but it’s become obvious the company is in no hurry to reconcile over $7k to a customer, veteran or not.
The app now uses ID.me and despite the claim presented by Verizon, discount applicants must verify now every year.
If anyone has had luck recovering overpayments as a result of this program, please share here.
