Return Device Without Activation

I placed an order to open a new line and receive a new phone, but I changed my mind and want to stay with my current carrier. I have not yet activated the phone. Can I just return the phone without activating it without doing anything else? Or will I be charged for service even though I am not using it?

I'm not sure about the service plan because if something was started, you might still have to pay for a month of service. To return a phone, it has to be within 30 days and there's a $50 restocking fee. See the link below for more details:
