Charged for a free phone.

I went to Walmart with my family when a Verizon agent asked us if we wanted a free phone, I asked him several times if it was really free and I don't have to pay. He answered yes and also said after 30 days, I can switch to any network of my choice since i don’t want to use Verizon. I agreed and everything went well.

To my surprise, I started getting emails and texts from Verizon saying I’ve got bills to pay. Bills for a free phone? I don’t understand this.

I'm wondering if that "Verizon agent" was legitimate. All the large carriers offer "free phone" promotions, but the thing is they are tied to a contract, where you must use that carrier for 2 or 3 years in order for the phone to be free. The carrier will issue a small credit to your monthly bill until the credits add up to the total cost of the phone, and it takes 2-3 years for that to happen.

Also, Verizon's device unlocking policy says it is 60 days before a Verizon device will unlock, not 30.

This happened at my local Walmart, I repeatedly asked him if it was totally free and he answered yes. I even told him I don’t want to switch networks since I have T-mobile family plan for mobile and spectrum for my internet so I have no need to switch networks. So, I was just given incorrect information, which is unexpected.
