Lost Data Connectivity

As soon as I leave my home network, I lose data connectivity, even though it is included in my plan. I have messed with this for the last year every time I go out of country. I had replaced my phone with another Samsung s21, using my old sim card, which was working fine on the old phone, and it continues to work fine at home.

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question, but you did make sure roaming was enabled when you're abroad? Also, are you prepaid or postpaid?

Moving an old SIM card from one phone to another is no longer supported and may even "break" the functionality of the new phone, as one other member posted about this causing quite a mess when he got a newer model of the same make of phone even.

Are you familiar with APNs and what they do? If I were to take a guess, your new phone without working data might have incorrect APN Settings while your Verizon SIM is installed.

On a Verizon Samsung phone, do the following to check your APN.

1: Open Settings

2: Select Connections

3: Select Mobile Networks

4: Select Access Point Names

5: By default there should be an entry called "Verizon Internet" with the subtext of VZWINTERNET if this is a Verizon phone. Make sure this is the APN which is selected.

6: If you only have the Verizon Internet APN, tap the Settings gear and verify the following settings:

Name: Verizon Internet

APN: VZWINTERNET

Proxy: None

Port: Not Set

Username: Not Set

Password: Not Set

Server: Not Set

MMSC: Not Set

Multimedia Message Proxy: Not Set

Multimedia Message Port: Not Set

MCC: 311

MNC: 480

Authentication Type: Not Set

APN Type: default,dun,supl

APN Protocol: IPv4/IPv6

APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4

Turn APN On/Off: On

Bearer: HSPA, GPRS, EDGE, eHRPD, UMTS, LTE, HSPAP, HSDPA, NR, HSUPA

Mobile Virtual Network Operator Type: GID

Mobile Virtual Network Operator Value: BAE00000000000000

7: If you have these settings and the mobile data still doesn't work when you turn off your Wi-Fi, try going to the Triple Dots menu in the Access Point Names Settings menu and tap "Reset to Default". Reboot your phone afterwards.

Another spot to check is under Settings —> Connections —> Mobile Networks —> Network Operators. Make sure this is set to "Automatic" so the phone can choose Verizon when your Verizon SIM is installed.

One final spot to check is under Settings —> Connections —> SIM Manager. Look here to see which SIM Cards are installed to your phone. The phone will only use data from the Primary SIM Card. Make sure your Verizon SIM is the one selected.

@smith6612 thanks for the details on checking the APN settings. I'm not a "techie" so really appreciate your feedback on the finer details of checking one's mobile network settings. However, the OP is talking about how their phone doesn't get internet access when they are outside of the US, unless I'm misunderstanding. A friend of mine who lives in Romania mentioned his wife having a similar issue when they were traveling elsewhere in the EU. Her phone worked fine in some countries, but not in others and they couldn't figure it out (they had roaming enabled and she had 10 gigs of data left when her phone just wouldn't connect to the internet at all until they got back home).

I don't think it's your phone at all…it's got to be something with the settings or possibly your service plan. I want to say some very old legacy plans do not include international service, or something's changed over time.

You didn't mention what part(s) of the world you were having the data issues. Some countries are still on 3G or even 2G, so in order to get any sort of internet connection at all, you'd have to enable 3G because otherwise your phone is going to run in either 4G or 5G since that's all there is in the US. However, most, if not all, modern apps won't run on 3G or earlier. Another possibility is if the phone is connected to a network which Verizon has no interconnection agreement with; in this case, manually changing to another available network will help.

One thing to note if you are prepaid is that funds must be loaded into your account and the Travel Pass toggle must be "on" prior to going abroad. If one or the other isn't done, then your phone plain doesn't work at all overseas and people can't call you either as they get some kind of error message.

If you continue to have problems with service abroad, there is a list of toll-free numbers for several countries which can be called with a landline to reach Verizon's International Services Support. This does not work on a cell phone, must be a landline.

If there is no toll-free number for the country you're in, you'd have to dial +1-908-559-4899 and pay for an international call.

Yes, It has to do with not getting data connectivity when outside of the US. It is included in my plan, and I have checked and followed all possibilities.

One possibility left: I noticed on my Verizon account that it lists my old phone, Galaxy S20; but last year I switched phones to an S21, and just used the SIM card from the first phone. Could that difference be why I can't get data connectivity out of country?

so, a year ago I switched phones from a Galaxy S20 to S21. I reused the SIM card from the S20. It seemed to work fine until I crossed the border. I discovered in my Verizon account that they still list my phone as the S20. Could that be the thing that causes loss of data connectivity when crossing the border?

Yes, I would say that's where your problem is coming from. Your account is still tied to the old phone and your SIM card is potentially "stuck in the past" too. I don't know off the top of my head if the S21 supports eSIM. If it does, then you can login to My Verizon on a computer and do the "switch device" thing. Otherwise, I would recommend getting a new SIM card from a corporate Verizon store as they're free and have them manually switch out the devices on your account. The S21 will need to be reactivated as if you'd never used it before.

3rd party stores may or may not stock Verizon SIM cards.
