iPhone 4 3G Speed????

Hello Everyone,

I live in San Antonio Texas, and am enjoying my iPhone 4 greatly, but was wondering about something. My wife is currently in the process of choosing her next phone, and one of the options identifed was the IPhone 4. While researching the various phones, she came upon a YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9NZXxh7eiE&feature=player_detailpage if you are interested) where they show very low 3G Internet speeds (like 200K up and down) using an app called Speed Test.net. So, I downloaded the app and discoverd thta I too had terrible 3G Internet speeds. It is fine while using WiFi, but it is really slow. Is this normal for the iPhone, or is just normal for my physical location? Has anyone else noticed better speeds using this app? Thanks!

it's not your phone....it's your location and there isn't much you can do about it. WiFi is much faster for you because it is accessing a faster network (either cable, DSL, etc, etc). I know you can find faster speeds in some places, but i believe the average 3g speeds are between 1 and 2 Mbps (i typically get around 1.5-1.75 when i'm on the 3g network). It does seem like you are definitely on the very low end of speeds. run the speedtest app a few times and see if it's consistent.....then run it when you are in another part of town to see if it's better. if this is the case, then you are just located in a fairly slow area.

I have the EXACT same issue with my Iphone 4 in and around Atlanta. I just switched from a Droid X and average speed using that phone on the Speedtest was 700K to 1.5 megs, depending on time of day. Since moving to the Iphone, I've NEVER seen anything HIGHER than 500K on 3G, which is pathetic. WiFi works great, but when you are paying for 3G you should get it. Support blames network traffic and location but I have been EVERYWHERE around Atlanta, right underneath a VZW cell site with a -45dbM signal and same results. Either my hardware is bad (which Verizon says it isn't, and I believe it, as it works FLAWLESSLY otherwise and makes voice calls perfectly, even in low signal areas, better than the Droid did) or Verizon is throttling bandwidth, something didn't go right during provisioning of the phone (maybe a feature code is not on there allowing 3G?) It's very aggravating as I LOVE the Iphone hands down over Droid (no reboots, spamware running eating up your battery, and apps that don't crash) but there is something wrong here. I have the latest IOS for VZW on my Iphone, and usually am in a strong signal area. Next stop will be the Apple store in Buckhead to see if they have any ideas.

If see a 5 bar at reception, then my download speeds are ~ 0.3Mbs or lower on the avg. (if lucky I get to see 0.5 )

if I have anything less than 5 bars, then it is way less than that. I mostly see lower 0.1Mbs, or even less.

I have never seen it go above 0.7Mbs.

I called support they asked me to do *228, have done it, does not make a huge improvement.

so when I start getting 0.01 then I do this and restart the phone and it gets better :smileyhappy: then I get 0.2Mbs yey 20fold...

I am new to Verizon, did not use other devices before with them.

is this common experience of people? Their 3G network is just slow? and overloaded

I am not talking about streaming video, I open goggle map, it takes a minute to get the map, it is just unbearable

I am also having the same slow 3G speeds in the Atlanta area. I never go over 500 Kbps down but my previous Droids got well over 2 mpbs a lot of the time. This issue is happening in the same locations with both of the iPhones on my account. I strongly believe that Verizon is throttling the download speeds of iPhone users. I have called over 10 times and they always blame it on my apps I use to test the speeds. But guess what Verizon I know better bc I use over 4 apps and get the same results. on BOTH of my iPhones.

Well... don't expect Verizon's 3G to get any better.... whereas they may be more consistent with speed, they have the slowest 3G speed on the planet when comparing peak speeds to AT&T. And with the new iPhone 4S this gap gets even greater as the data compression HSPA+ that AT&T uses that Verizon does not, possible speeds are now up to14.4mbs compared to Verizon's top speeds of roughly 2mbs. Of course your real world speeds may vary considerably as you noted. Verizon is done with 3G now. It is what it is. Now 4G LTE is another story, but Apple won't touch this until the next iPhone at the earliest.

ertugrul, wow having a new device and no service is definitely something to be upset about and I totally understand your frustration. Thank you for providing all your information regarding speed, location, and what steps you have taken to resolve your issue. I curious to know, what did the technical support representatives tell you on the phone when you called our support line? Did they file a trouble ticket? Did they review your area to locate any issues reported by other customers? Did they trouble-shoot your device? These are all the things we check when trouble-shooting a network issue.

Additionally, I was unable to locate any currently known issues in the Houston area. Please let us know what trouble-shooting was performed with technical support so that we can provide additional steps or speak with you to file that trouble-ticket.

I just switched from ATT to VZW yesterday, paid an ETA to do so. Usin the Speedtest.net app, I am SHOCKED at the SLOW 3G speed - or lack thereof! Consistant downloads & uploads of 0.3 or LOWER.

I called and got a good tech support rep who said all towers around me are fine, good "bars" on the phone and yet my phone is jumping between 1X and 3G connections, never keeping a 3G speed... got a case # and was told this is NOT normal.

He said he'll get back to me by Saturday with an answer. *I hope so, as this is a joke. I will be returning the phone & cancelling the plan. Even donwloading the speedtest app took for-EVER. Yikes....
