Google Talk Mobile

I understand (I think) that I can not use Skype Mobile on my Droid to call back to the US (I wish that I had understood that when I told my wife that it was possible) but I am looking for other alternatives to call home from Europe.

As I see it, there are several possibilties -

1) Use Skype on my Netbook

2) Use Google Talk Mobile on my Droid

3) Use Google Talk on my Netbook

4) Don't call home.

Will any of these ideas work or have I missed something.

Hi. I understand that you have questions on how you can call back home using Skype. The Skype mobile does require you to be connected to our network to make calls. If you will be in Europe, you can use Skype on your Netbook or Google Talk on your netbook if you are connected to the internet.

Skype on your netbook will work on WiFi if you want to use it.

I don't really know how Google talk works. I suppose if you can find a WiFi connection you can use google Talk to Voice Chat. I don't know about the Mobile version but on the netbook definitely. At first I thought you meant Google Voice and i was like What? That won't work. But Google talk has a voice chat option which might work if you wife is signed in most of the time. Mine isn't.

There are actually a few other options I think. As long as you have a Skype account you can use it on your Droid through Fring. It allows the use of Skype in and Skype out or whatever they are calling Skype out these days. Accounts are cheap and so are international rates so I would go with Skype if for no other reason but the phone will ring on their end where with Talk I don't really know how it notifies you of anything. With Fring you can make Skype calls over WiFi which means that Droid which will essentially be a weighted brick in Europe will allow you to make and receive calls on WiFi should that be available where you will be.

If your wife is anything like mine the Don't call home option won't work if you expect to be married when you get back.

if you have a built in web cam....or if you can spend $25 on an external webcam, just use your netbook. i got my entire exended family webcams for christmas a few years back and we now all use skype to call each other from our pc's. it really is cool (and free) for families that are distant. my kids can talk face to face with their gramma in germany, their aunt in IL, their uncle in miami and their other gramma in jacksonville, fl.....all from AZ. your wife's pc will ring just like a phone....the only issue is that you sort of need to schedule when you will call her so she can be near the pc. you can also leave text messages through skype......ie i will message (through skype) my mom that "we will call at......" and when she sees the message on her pc, she knows to hang around at that time if she can. it would be nice to use the phone, but if you can't then skype via your netbook is pretty cool......especially if you and your wife both get or have web cams (and of course, speakers and mics)
