Verizon iPhone4 does NOT work in Hongkong Airport

Asian travelers be aware.... the Verizon iPhone4 does NOT work at Hongkong International Airport.... I couldn't make any phone call out and can't receive any incoming calls either.... although the phone has the WEAK signal of roaming (1 to 2 lines)...but any phone calls I tried to make or text messaging all did NOT go through.... it was such a huge disappointment. I just don't know why my old verizon blackberry phone worked great in Hongkong/China/Taiwan and the iPhone just did not work....

Also be aware, even if you have the WiFi connection, the Verizon iPhone will NOT allow you to browse the internet using Safari, becuase it will ask you to turn on the data-roaming service.... what kind of plan is this ???? I waited for the iPhone to be available for so long but it turned out to be useless when I needed it the most... thinking about returnnig it due to the service failure

Was your old BlackBerry a dual mode one? That may have been the case. Not sure if Hong Kong is CDMA or GSM, but like you pointed out...the signal was weak so that likely has a lot to do with it. Based on a quick glance at the coverage map it appears that coverage on CDMA in Hong Kong would be spotty at best at any rate. I think if travelers review the international usage info on the VZ website prior to travel they'll get a clearer understanding of what can and can't be done with their particular device...and if necessary use the option of getting a loaner for international travel. Not exactly what most would like to have to do but it's an option if having a wireless device while traveling internationally is a must.

The blackberry was most likely a dual mode (CDMA EVDO Rev-A and Quad Band GSM) with a sim card for global roaming such as the storms, tour and bold as mentioned above. Data on the iPhone should've worked on wifi unless Verizon and Apple crippled the phone. The map for hong kong lists cdma roaming but says Advanced EVDO device required so not sure if the iphone 4 falls under that or not. http://b2b.vzw.com/international/Roaming/Asia-Pacific/Hong%20Kong.html
