Upgrade to Smartphone Data Mid-Contract

So I currently have a Samsung Reality with the cheap $10 for 25mb data plan, and was thinking about purchasing a Smartphone for full retail price before i'm eligible for an upgrade, and would be looking to aquire the $30 data plan as well.

 

Is this a feasible option at this point of a contract? Will the contract be extended with a new data plan? Or do I have any other options?

You can do exactly what you describe without extending your contract.  With Verizon, you can switch phones at any time, and purchase phones at full retail at any time.  Once you activate the smartphone on your line, you will be required to activate the $30 unlimited data plan on your line.
