Pinpoint red light in upper left corner. What is it and why does it keep putting phone in sleep mode

I have a Droid 2. Lately I am seeing a tiny pinpoint size red light in the upper LEFT corner of the phone (opposite from where I see the notification lights).

When I wake the phone up and see the red light, the phone immediately goes back into sleep mode. I've tried turning the phone off and letting it rest for a couple of minutes, then turning the phone on again. Doesn't solve the problem.

Why am I seeing this light and what do I need to do to stop this problem.

It mostly seems to happen in the am and it's very frustrating when I need to make call.

Hello pdronline! The tiny red dot on the upper left side of your Droid 2 is the infrared proximity sensor. It is used by the phone to detect the range of your skin, and as such determine if the display needs to be illuminated. Example: If it detects that your face is within inches of the display, it will darken to save power (not go to Sleep Mode). If your phone is going into Sleep Mode (and not darkening to save power), then it is not behaving within design specifications. If it is going into Sleep Mode, please let me know. Thanks!
