Moving from Blackberry to Android

Hi, all,

Some of you may know me from the Blackberry threads here in the Verizon Community. As a Blackberry user for the past 6 years, I made a big decision to switch to the Android platform. It was a hard choice, because change is hard for a lot of us. However, there were a few things that made the transition easy. The biggest was price. Verizon has the Buy One Get One Free right now with the Motorola Droid 3 so I could not resist. I like the physical keyboard, which I guess is because I am used to the Blackberry keyboard on my Bold.

Mine and my wife's Droid 3's are in transit from Verizon, so I look forward to learning all about the Droid 3 and the Android platform in general. I look forward to your suggestions and comments on how to make my transition smooth from Blackberry to Droid 3. I will still be posting over in the Blackberry threads helping folks who need help over there. I also will be posting here in the Android threads lending my 2 cents worth from time to time, but mostly listening and learning from your posts.

I look forward to being a part of this community and look forward to chatting with some of you. Call on me if you ever have questions or comments.

Hi, I would start by transferring your contacts to a Google account. You will need an individual one for you and one for your wife. You can use the Blackberry desktop manager to export your contacts. SydneyK also posted another way by logging into Google from her BB and somehow transferred the contacts that way. I'll see if I can find the link.

If you use Facebook, this article might also come in handy for those notifications.

Also the online manual is a good place to start for the basics of how the phone works. It doesn't cover everything, so questions are always welcome.

this is a good place to start. there are also a string of videos that google released (googl it....lol) that help with voice activation features. i find that some don't work as advertised, but the voice activation for navigation is incredible. the voice to text is pretty impressive too.

By far the thing that ihaf the most issue with was losing my bedside mode from my blackberry. To solve this I downloaded sound manager v2 from the market, although it doesn't work exactly like the bedside mode I am able to schedule by time/day the volumes on the different notifications and once set I don't need to make any further adjustments.

Welcome to android world streetDoc.there will alott of neet things you'll find that you can do with your droids being with BB for 6 years is a long time an it would be hard to switch to something new as i had a BB curve for two years an thought now way will i switch but i did an i'm smitten with them an wonce you an the misses has them for a while you say why did'nt i do this alott sooner . :smileyvery-happy: But all the best of luck to ya an have fun with them. I have my Droid3 set up and it is working great. I did buy the dock and it works great in bedside mode. I love all the apps that are available. The D3 is fast and the screen looks awesome. Thanks to all of you for your tips and help.

I too made the move from BB to the Droid world. I never thought I would. I kept saying that it'd never be me. Nope. NEVER. I loved my little Crackberry. It was my bestest bud! LOL. I made the move with the Droid 2. Though it has its quirks, I chose it because of the physical keyboard as well. I just don't like the whole "total touchscreen" thing at all. I tried it once and hated it, which is how I got my BB in the first place. Now, I'm "hooked" and will probably be a Droid user for life. (As long as they have phones with physical keyboards that is!) :smileyvery-happy:

Hey, Mama,

I am totally with you on the transition from BB to Droid. The keyboard was the big selling point for me on the D3. I have man-sized fingers and they tend to hit the wrong key on the on-screen keyboard. I do miss Blackberry Messenger, but I have found Ping Chat to be a nice app for IM.

Ps: I also wanted to say I was glad the Droid 3 and Blackberry Bold use the same car charger...yeah..saving a few dollars.
