Samsung Stratosphere turns off when keyboard is closed

I have had the Stratosphere for 2 or 3 months and it is OK. (My son's Razor is much better.) I am starting to have problems with it tho. Today it has decided to shut the phone off when I close the slider to the keyboard. What the heck? Is anyone else having this problem? If so how do I fix it?

Another Strat issue. It's not a great Android phone. I like the keyboard and the 4G, but otherwise it doesn't measure up to other new phones. Mine had other issues as well, like showing the wrong time occasionally, random reboots, and terrible lag.

That is exactly why im on today...my phone has been shutting off on me for 3 days and my daughter is having the same issue. In 3 days it has shut off about 30 times when i open or close the phone. As you know it takes well over a minute for it to come on and be functional. Annoying!! Im wondering of one of the updates have started to cause this since it is sent by Verizon as a suggested update. What did you download? I had 19 suggested updates and did all but the football one.

Mine started acting up right after all of those downloads too! And I could not stop the downloads, most of them I don't even use like the NFL one. I took the battery out while it was still on and tried everything I could think of. Out of the blue about 5 or 6 days later it just started working again and I haven't had any other shutting off problems. I hope yours gets to working again soon. You might want to read the below response from Verizon and see if it can help you. Good Luck!

I did pull the battery, several times. This all started after a huge download from Verizon. More than Half the stuff that was downloading are things I don't even use. I have only added a few game apps and that is it. (Words, Scramble and Spider) I don't use the other apps. If I want something I just search the internet.

It was also just shutting off whenever it wanted as well as when the keyboard was shut. It has since stop doing that, I don't know why. So far it seems to be working fine. But I have to say with the problems I have had with this phone I really wish I hadn't bought it. I chose it because it is my first smart phone and it looked easier that the others to understand. If I had to do over I would have gotten the Raxor or Bionic like I purchased for my son, he has no problems with his.

I have had the same issue that you are having.I've had 4 stratospheres since December they work good for 2-3 weeks then they just start shutting off.I called VZW support they say theres no know issues and they send me a recondition phone. im waiting on one now!And when asked to replace the phone with a different model they said they might be able too But i haft to buy a battery and cover for the new phone if they choose to do so.

Well well well. I was told by Verizon support that they have no known reports on this issue with the Stratosphere - yet here is a whole room of you! My circumstances are exactly the same: The original and replacement phones started powering off 2-6 weeks after first use. Replaced battery and failed in a few weeks. Updated all Apps, including the few that I had loaded. Reset numerous times over the the last 3 months. Just received 2nd replacement (third phone). This time I'm not loading or using any apps until it survives a month or so. My smart phone just went dumb.

If Samsung hasn't identified the root cause, I don't see how this type of issue would be caught in a refurb environment where they run preset tests. This means these defective phones are likely labeled NPF (no problem found) and getting recirculated as Like New Certified Replacement. And guess what? The beat goes on...

I have the same issue after 3 months of working fine. When the keyboard is opened or closed quickly the phone turns off. It also turns off for no reason when in my purse fully charged. I have tried the battery pull. Next is a factory reset but I actually think after reading these posts that the phone itself is faulty, not a software issue. Any unusual jolting of the phone makes it turn off.

I have been having the same problem. Phone was fine for the first few months. Now I open the keyboard to answer a text and the phone turns off in the middle of my typing. Very frustrating! I tried the safe mode and deleted the apps as Verizon has suggested and it still turns off when the keyboard is open. I hope Verizon will resolve this issue or will offer a different model phone to customers with this problem.

I just pulled the battery, waited a minute or so, then re-installed the battery. The phone has been working fine since then, I am very careful about opening and closing the keyboard, I do it very gently, no more snapping it shut. All’s good with the phone now. Didn’t need to get a factory reset.

This thread is dead, but I have had this phone for about a year a figure I would throw in my 2 cents.

Via Google searches there are 2 major known issues with this phone/keyboard.

1) The keyboard when typing a text or similar activity, will start using the keys as shortcuts. So hitting 'e' will send you to email. Things like that. Only 'fix' seems to be rebooting the phone. Its not due to battery, or third party apps, it seems to have to do with the firmware in the phone.

2) This sliding the phone turning it off issue. The Verizon rep was just giving you the standard word track for pretty much any problem, but it has nothing to do with software. Essentially there is a power connection within the phone, that when impacted, will cause the phone to turn off. I have tested extensively on my phone, and if I slide the slider with a certain force, it turns offs. I can slide the phone slowly, and it will never shut off. But the instant I forget, and just snap slide it, it will shut off.

Issue number 1 only happens about once a week of frequent use, and is fixed with a restart, and issue number 2 is easily avoided.

True niether should be issues, if phone manufacturers cared about making a phone that would last more than a year or two if you are lucky.

We need to start a movement to recall all of the Samsung Stratosphere.. I just had the same problem.. had the phone replaced 2 weeks ago!! My warranty runs out in 3 weeks!! I'm on my third Stratosphere!! The new one { certified refurbished} would not let me text today I spent 1 hour with Verizon on the phone and '''basically there's is nothing we can do" iT SEEMS EVERYONE IS HAVING LOTS OF ISSUES WITH THE STRATOSPHERE!! I have the same issue with mine. I'm on the third one. It's not just when I close the keyboard. I can have it in my pocket and walk from my car and into work and it will shut off. It seems any type of vibration makes it shut off. I like the form factor of the phone and prefer one with a keyboard, does anyone know if the Stratosphere II has these issues? I would hope Samsung addressed them in it.

After three Stratospheres that had the same issue they sent me a Motorola Droid 4. No probems. Excellent phone.

I have the same phone (2nd one) and I am having the same problem with the phone shutting off when I close the keyboard. I understand the "close phone gently" solution probably work to keep the problem from happening,but that is really difficult to remember to do that every time. I think samsung has an issue that the are trying to avoid and not address.
