Well sounds like this Round is Going to Affect Every Body And i mean Every body That includes The ones that were Grandfathered into a Unlimited Plan..
My advice to any One that has an Unlimited Plan an want's to keep it another 2! Get your Device Now!!
Verizon took away my unlimited data without my knowledge or consent when I exchanged my Blackberry for the I-Phone 4S. They have denied my request to have it restored twice and I cannot get to the next level of complaint. This is just plain bad business. As a small businessman I would never expect a Vendor to change the terms of our agreement without my consent. UnBELIEVABLE!!
Well pushing one's out of something there already on if this is there Plan of Action: Well it's like being at the Edge of a Cliff an your trying not to Go over an there pushing to Make you Go Over..
It's going make Many to Want to Use there Wi-Fi even More or find Free Wi-Fi Like Sporting Event's Get your Pop Corn, Twizzlers , Cotton Candy, an get your free Wi-Fi b33.
wow...that sucks! i cannot imagine my data and mobile hot spot being capped, that will affect my communication and days when i work remotely tremendously! we are screwed if this article is valid...sure, jumping ship is an option but you'll be dealing with throttling of data and/or subpar service with other carriers. what a bummer!
Come to Sprint u have unlimited data with no throttling on the Sprint network im with Sprint and i don't have to worry about throttling or slow down speeds.
i got with vzw again because of sprints crappy hardware. but with the article i read on another site we will be dropping vzw and going back to sprint.
I wish I could believe this wasn't true. Sucks. Now I have to go to ATT, and sometimes its not as good as Verizon, but I will definitely not go to Sprint! I heard their service is slow. Well hopefully the person just accidently said something wrong. I would have never seen myself without a different service provider, but now I guess I will need to look into it
For how much longer????
Sprint is slow for now cause they just started rolling out LTE service, before that it was just 3G. In my area there 3G is just as good as ATT's and Verizon's.
I am done with Verizon. We will not be upgrading our phones. It already costs our family $180 a month for two smart phones, with a State discount. Arrogant CEO can get bent. Apparently he did not read the Netflix saga. Slow software updates, 4g outages, constant nickle and diming, new upgrade fees! Adios Verizon!
I am almost with this leaving VZ myself. I had my phone stolen this morning. I call customer service suspend my service via VIOP when I got home. I contacted Asurion (insurance company for our phones) and they told that to replace my phone (not out of stock) would be $99.99. I got upset with them and said "heck for 149.99 + tax... I could just get a brand new one". I talked again with customer service. Not once did she say anything about the $30 upgrade fee... I had her on the phone for over 1 hour. We even talked that I did not want to wait for a new phone to be sent to I asked if I could go directly to a store to pick it up. SURE she said ........ and still no mention about the fee. I arrive at the store to grab the phone and the guy then told me about the fee and said it went into effect 4/22/12. I asked what he was talking about... customer service said nothing about it. WHERE/WHEN was the email to customers stating the fee being instituted??? I was frustrated so I left the store and returned home to see if there were others. Then as if to receive another SLAP across the face, I read the article eliminating my unlimited data plan (btw the guy at the store and customer service both assured me that if I upgraded the phone I was still grandfathered into it). I am almost at wits end.
$100 insurance now VS. $225 new phone upgrade now VS. MORE $$$$$$ because of another change (not of my choosing) within 2 months????
I saw this on android central and just finished listening to the VZW teleconference announcing this. I have been a loyal VZW customer for 16+ years. I have 2 cell phone lines and 3 FiOS home services. I stayed BECAUSE of the grandfathered data plan. Since it's going away, so will I and my $$$$$. From posts on several sites, VZW will LOSE many customers because of this "bottom-line" centric decision, so it is fitting and appropriate that it negatively affect VZW's bottom line! Adìos BigRed.
Thats your fault, you should have asked for the total
Interesting indeed. Thanks for posting it, B33. Can't wait to hear what the cost and limits are for the new data share plan.
I'm so mad you can boil an egg on my head, this is a slap in the face for customer loyalty. We all know how money hungry Verizon is, and not only does this go above and beyond it It. It just insults every customer that has spent money on this company. I'm letting my wallet do the talking for me. and as soon as my contract expires I am done. Since other companies are coming out with LTE on their own its not a loss to not have it from Verizon.
Your Welcome Sydney i Just hate that it has to be News like This: After the $30.00 Dollar Splash of Tabasco we all Got in the Face as Customers they're Now trying to Shove the Habanero Down our Throats before we had a Chance to Recover... I figured this though or something like it. But there pushing the 4G hard an they want the Money For it. So if we all want a piece of this Hot Pepper were going have to Swallow it Hard..or Move on..

I have been a long time Verizon customer and is BS for Verizon to pull unlimited data plan. I will be changing to Sprint as soon as my contract is up and for $55 per month for unlimited everything. So long Verizon.....
This, plus the $30 extra to upgrade deal. Wow! This is getting to be a wee too much. I am a loyal Verizon customer, but I have to think a little on this. Two slaps on the customer's face, one too many.
I think it is very unfair of VZW to take unlimited data away, especially from grandfathered customers. I think it should be illegal for phone carriers and ISPs to shaft their customers with these ridiculous caps and limits. Totally unlimited Internet should be considered a human right.
I smell the content industry behind a lot of this move toward capping, as unlimited data makes it easy and cheap for people to download and torrent large files. I think they want to discourage this behavior by capping and limiting data and bandwidth. It's just sad that ISPs and phone carriers are with them on this instead of on the side of the paying customers who want to be able to use the Net freely and without restrictions.
Sprint get ready for new customer. Verizon good-bye from long time
customer. So much for valued customer other then getting the bird from
Verizon
I've been a Verizon customer for 30 years, back when it was Bell Atlantic. I couldn't even get a break on the price for a new smartphone, and now they're doing away with the unlimited data plan.
There is really no reason for me to stick with Verizon. Even their FiOS service is starting to get the same stutters and starts that my Comcast TV service had.
Maybe if enough of us let our feelings be known, Verizon will stop this scheme.
Yeah, right.
I have less and less reasons to be loyal to VZW. They are one of the most expensive carriers around, but they at the time I joined, they had the best network, great phones, good customer service, and from all accounts, rewarded their loyal customers.
They still have the best network, but other carriers have caught up in terms of phones and customer service. And for the sake of money and greed, VZW has decided that they should lower their customer loyalty to the same level of other carriers. First, it was doing away with the every 2-year upgrade. Now, VZW is doing away with grandfathered (ie. loyal customers) unlimited data plans.
So the next time my contract comes up, I will open it up to all other carriers. The ONLY discriminator VZW now has is their network. And while that is pretty good, other carriers will slowly catch up. And even VZW remains the leader in the network, going with a cheaper carrier, with same/better phones, same/better customer service, and same/better customer loyalty is pretty tempting.
Well, if Verizon takes away my unlimited data, I will take away my money and move to one of their competitors that still offers unlimited data,4g, iPhones, and is cheaper then they are!. I've stayed with Verizon for years now, and if they want to remove the ONLY reason why I stayed with them--and paid more doing so!--then I will take my business somewhere else.
Heck, I called their customer service this morning to ask about this, and the nice lady I talked to had no idea what I was talking about. You would think that with a major policy change like this that they would bring their own staff up to speed before you tell the world about it.
They just made it very easy for me to leave when my contract is up. Loyalty is a two way street. You can't expect it if you ain't giving it back. Cya Verizon.
I've been with Verizon forever -- a decade or more,, I think -- and am the 'daddy' of a family plan of 5 users. We'll all be leaving Verizon if they go ahead with this plan. I used to brag about Verizon as the "slightly more expensive but far better" mobile phone service provider, and persuaded many friends to switch... but this was back in the days when Verizon customer service was awesome, when phone calls didn't drop just as often as they do with other providers, and when data wasn't slow compared to other providers and when it didn't hang constantly, requiring constant reloading of web pages. And now they want me to pay extra for their crappy service? I don't think so. At some point, corporations think they have us backed into a corner and will accept whatever they throw at us. I, for one, won't accept it, not at all.
I have 4 phones....all contracts are up except for one and it is up 10/15/12....I don't need this crap and I won't be paying the same price for 2 GB when I have unlimited now....sorry VZ, will be leaving soon.
Oh yeah....ever heard of Netflix...they tried something like this and...well, Google it :smileyhappy:
That is exaclty where I am at right now.
$100 NE2 gets reduced to $50 NE2. Then $50 NE2 goes away. Then unlimited data for new contracts goes away. Then grandfathered unlimited data users start getting throttled. Then $30 upgrade fee is added. Then unlimited data users are FORCED into tiered data plans. They even TRY to charge us extra for paying our bills! Wow, there is absolutely no denying the path/pattern that Verizon has chosen. What made them #1 is no longer part of their business plan; customers are nothing more than fodder to them now, to be used, abused, and taken advantage of, to be squeezed of every dime possible, in spite of ongoing record profits. Any other claimed "justification" is simply camouflage. Now that that they are the biggest man on campus, they have no intention of "playing nice".
I've been a Verizon customer, and hardcore supporter, for nearly 20 years; 2 plans (1 individual, 1 family), 5 lines, 4 smartphones, 1 feature phone, 3 unlimited data plans, one 2GB data plan, one 75MB data plan...It's over. I will not be upgrading/renewing my contracts. I just figured out that, on a conservative estimate, I've paid Verizon at least $40,000 over the past 20 years! And this is how they show appreciation for that. AT&T has great service in my area, they will be getting my $350+ per month that I currently pay for all those lines.
I think people are reading a lot more into this than there actually is.
People have been asking for years for a Family Share Data Plan. Verizon has announced plans to offer one and now they are getting slammed for it.
Why don't you wait and see how it works out first. It would be my guess if you are on an individual plan, you will be able to keep your unlimited data since you have no one with whom to share the data. If you are on a Family Plan and want to add a Family Data Plan, of course you are going to have to give up your unlimited data as it is not being offered anymore. How are you going to have a Family Share Data Plan with some phones on a plan having unlimited data and some phones not? They will all have to switch to a plan currently being offered which are the tiered plans. Don't want the Family Plan, then you may be able to continue paying separately for data on each line, but you will lose your argument that Verizon does not offer shared data, an option which countless subscribers have been asking to get for quite awhile.
Family Plan owners have been asking for shared data plans for quite awhile. I have always had the opinion that you just may get what you are asking, but it may not be what you want. Don't expect Verizon to lose out on the deal. You may have "some" savings over the $150 minimum that 5 lines on a Family Plan would pay for data on each individual line, but it probably wouldn't even drop it to $100.
It seems that now that Family Share data is on the horizon, people are more mad than when they were paying separately for each line!
For everyone that is having problems with your wireless provider there is an option that many do not know exist. If you are having problems getting your issues solved you can file a formal complaint with the FCC. They have a form you can fill out on line which will allow you to use the FCC to investigate your complaint. This complaint form is something all wireless providers cringe at the thought of dealing with. I used it when I was slammed during the merger with Altel and VZ. It was the first time I was ever given the opportunity to talk to someone in the industry at a higher level than the supervisor. I talked to a VP and when I explained the problem he made it right. This option is there but not something that most people even know about. If you feel you are being handled poorly with any issue and do not get it resolved in a fair manor I would not hesitate to use this route of problem solving again becaues it works. The way I figure it I will stay with 3G and as more people move to LTE my service will become better. When they force me to change I believe that this issue will be a mute issue because the investment will be already paid for and they will be forced into offering better plans to compete with competition. As M said in Karake Kid "patience grass hopper" here is the link.

but there is a catch.....if 2 people who now pay 30 each for unlimited now are forced to either pay 30 a month for 2gb and risk going over the limit and pay out the wazoo, or bump up to the Hundred dollar plan to be safe....either way, you are paying more than the 60 bucks you paid when you had seperate plans. Verizon is not giving you a deal.
Here are direct quotes from Fran Shammo, CFO:
"As they start to migrate they'll have to come off unlimited and go to the shared data plan," said Shammo who told analysts that he expects the shared plans would boost revenue for Verizon Wireless over time.
"We're fairly confident we'll start to see people uptick in the tiers, which is where we'll see the revenue accretion." Shammo said in a webcast of an investor conference.

Your "guess" is wrong. Why guess when the information is already out there? Verizon has made it clear that all unlimited data plans are going away, not just on family plans.
While I agree that shared family data plans might be cheaper for some depending on their actual use, the reality is that many of us are losing, since our data will be capped.
On my individual plan, I have unlimited data for $30, and currently average about 2.5GB per month. Is a tiered plan for that level going to be cheaper? No way, and it will be limited besides. On my family plan, I currently pay $100 for data; 2 unlimited (each uses about 2.5GB), one 2GB (uses about 1GB), one 75MB (uses none; data plan was forced on the line because it is a "feature" phone, more bull****). So no matter what the "configuration" of a shared data plan, I will be losing, since those first 2 lines will no longer have unlimmited data. Out of the 4 lines on my family plan, we average about 6 GB per month total. What do you really think that Verizon's shared tiered data plans are going to look like? Will it be a savings for me? Based on Verizon's actions over the past 2 years, I would bet against that.
Y'know, I bet if each person reading this forum were to call Verizon today to tell them how unhappy we are -- and if we were to all go inside a Verizon store, if we happen to pass by one in the next several days, and convey to the clerks there how unhappy we are -- they might just possibly get the message.
Nah, they won't. I see VZW posted a note on their news board...... Love how it is because it is what customers want! Without a word about dumping unlimited plans

yeah that sucks for me because i use about ten gig a month because i leave out in the middle of nowhere that verizon covers. I also pay extra for the hotspot feature on my phone so i can do that but now i have come up to a work around and it may be a little more expensive but what you can do is just save up for a phone and get a unlocked version of a cell phone and then just switch devices. That way you can keep the unlimited data because you would not be technically upgrading with verizon so you would not technically lose it and you will not be renewing the contract with verizon
I'm willing to try that. They need to slow and throttle as necessary their network speeds and remove the usage policies. What they are trying to accomplish with bandwidth usage caps is just not going to work. I've seen it time and time again. It's the concept that you can restrict high speeds on a car and eliminating the risks of collisions by restricting how much gas your allowed to put in the tank. It just won't work. Which is really a problem? A customer streaming a video at 256KBps and can quickly go over a usage cap from watching a lot of movies but the bandwidth used is always the same 256KBps or the freaks downloading a couple of pirated DVD's a month hitting the network in shorter stretches at 7MBps using unthrottled bit torrents. The pirated DVD's are going to stay within the usage limits but are going to make life miserable for everyone else on the network. It doesn't take many people at all shotgunning bit torrents at 5GB per month to pretty much keep the network in a state of wrecked.
Really as consumers we need to get a wake up call. The advertisements and the pretty big numbers that ISP's are flashing at us isn't real. They don't have the services they are promising in marketing. We need to get a little more grounded and we need to try to get the big mega-corp ISP's to throttle down client connections to match what they really have for uplink backbones and pitch the usage caps. And honestly... if the ISP's were delivering to us what they're making us believe the service is, most of us would be happy with a T1 speed of 1.5Mbps. For the majority of people the T1 would end up being a lot faster than their oversold bandwidth Comcast pooled network with their theoretical max speeds of 105Mbps. This one-up your competitor's speed game has been a disaster for us the consumers.
we can thank everyone who has been BEGGING for shared data plans for years now. they are getting what they want. this blows for me because i have 3 lines but only one with data (unlimited)......but i can see where it will benefit families with 4 or 5 lines on one plan, who all use smartphones. i'm guessing verizon will start seeing A LOT more friends or families start sharing plans. depending on the pricing and tiers, i'll be calling my mom, brother, and sister to see if they just want to let their contracts expire and hop on my plan. i suspect that while we will be limited to XX gigs of data, verizon would get less $ out of one plan of mine (adding the 3 of them) than they get from our 4 separate plans right now.
Well it looks like I along with a ton of other people will be leaving Verizon when they take my unlimited data away. This is no way to treat their longtime loyal customers.
30 - Dollars a month I pay for unlimited data10 - Years as a customer of Verizon 0 - Seconds it will take me to switch carriers if they take this from me
No loyal customer or early adopter goes unpunished.
Don't get used to the unlimited / no throttling on the Sprint network. I can just about guarantee once they suck in all these Verizon customers that will go away. My plan is just to get rid of my cell phone completely. Maybe once all these companies start losing more and more of their customers they will re-think their business decisions.
Can someone answer this question?
If my current contract already has unlimited 4G service are they still going to take it away? I don't have to upgrade or change any terms to my existing contract. It seems that they legally can't make any changes to my existing contract. So as long as I don't change anything or upgrade I should be able to keep my unlimited data, correct?
amalashock wrote: It seems that they legally can't make any changes to my existing contract.
amalashock wrote:

False. The contracts we signed gives them the right to change any part of it. There is, however, the material adverse effect clause that could be used but it's a crapshoot. Doubt they'd go that route though unless they want to go out of business. As for existing 4G contracts, no one knows. He only mentioned 3G to 4G transitions (yay iPhone) but I wouldn't think 4G to 4G would be any different.
I hope this word gets out! I will absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, cancel my service to Verizon when my contract expires in September if they follow through with this. Their service is great, the 4G is insanely fast but you're taking away a major feature for me being a customer. I will go back to Sprint, hands down! Verizon, listen to your customers. If you don't, you're going to face another "Netflix epidemic!" You're simply looking for another way to screw us and fatten your pockets, and I'm not cool with that!
I think you can keep it till your upgrade date, then there's no contract, and they can do what they want, regardless.
If this stupid plan goes through, after 10 years of pushing Verizon on my family and friends, I'll take my six phones and join my husband at Sprint. Even though it kills me to admit that to him.
Some on here say that you will be forced onto the tiered plans. I say that it is unclear what will happen when the change is made and we will just have to wait and see. To back up their argument they use statements such as "As they start to migrate they'll have to come off unlimited and go to the shared data plan," which was made by a Verizon official. Although it doesn't say you will be forced to migrate, some are assuming that it does mean that as illustrated by the following:
"As they start to Migrate" is a statement of fact. It's not "If" they migrate. It is a mattter of "When" they migrate.
If I made the following statement, "As they start to migrate, they will have to go to the unlimited shared texting plan", this is not a statement of fact that people are going to be "forced" or a matter of "when" people migrate, but a question of "if" they want to migrate from being charged per line for texting as opposed to being charged for shared texting. Verizon made no such forced move with Family Plans and shared texting, so I see no reason to believe they will force you with data. Others do not agree. Additionally, people who are making the argument that you will be forced into a Family Share Data Plan do not explain how Verizon can force an Individual line to share data with another line they do not have.
Regardless, your data plan is not part of your contract and can change without being a breach of contract. Otherwise if you signed a contract when purchasing a smartphone and switched back to a basic phone, THIS would ALSO be a breach of contract since you would have agreed to pay for data throughout the life of your contract.
As it is, you can switch between smart and basic phones without any consequence.
As to the unlimited data, only time will tell.
The policy hasn't been implemented yet, so if you want to keep your unlimited plan at the same price, you should upgrade now. I was able to upgrade my 3G smartphone to a 4G smartphone, keeping my unlimited data plan even though when I tried to purchase my phone online I received a message that said my current unlimited plan was not compatible with my new device. After calling customer service and speaking to a rep, they confirmed that I could keep my current unlimited data plan. They also noted it in my account so that I could call back if I had any problems.
I read this on Yahoo! and I called to ask what my end contract date was for both my lines of service. I feel like we're being forced to do a shared data plan if we were to upgrade to a 4G phone, which me and my boyfriend were planning on doing this December. We both have an unlimited data package, which we do use QUITE extensively. I use almost 3gbs of data a month alone on my device; I really do rely on my unlimited data package for my iphone. This is absolutely ridiculous. I PAY for the unlimited data WILLINGLY! I plan my bill every month when its due. I don't care about the cost, I just want a reliable network, which Verizon has been providing for me so far. I think we should have a choice of doing the shared data package or if we want our own. I could understand if you had 5 lines and you might seen a cost benefit. But I know damn sure and well that half of the customers with Verizon currently are only staying because they offer unlimited, but there are other providers that do. I just hate the idea of going to Sprint for service, but if that's what I have to do to get away from this stupid shared data plan, so be it.
We can debate English 101 and sentence structure all day if you like. "As they start to Migrate" does not sound optional. Sure, you have a choice to keep your current phone until it is no longer supported but eventually, you WILL have to get a new phone, thus, like I said it is a matter of WHEN, not IF.
I suppose a loop hole may be that you pay full price for your phone, or buy a new phone from an alternate store such as ebay or Amazon...or whatever but then you might as well assume the "new" data plan and pay the potential increased costs.
Like you say...we will not know for sure until it is released however the intentions seem fairly clear.
As far as Individual plans...If they are not included in this round of changes then look for them in the future...rest assure.

I could understand if you had 5 lines and you might seen a cost benefit....

Kind of like the option Verizon gives you with texting plans. You can pay per line or 1 price for all lines. Of course there are some on here who don't believe that Verizon will offer this option with data. We will find out, though.
Very easy! My plans expire in August for 4 phones. There is a company across the street named SPRINT offering unlimited data plans without all the fancy charges from Verizon.I will pay them a visit soon, because Verizon has made for quite some time money off me. Like the Banks: To Big a company that needs to be broken up.

Sure, you have a choice to keep your current phone until it is no longer supported but eventually, you WILL have to get a new phone, thus, like I said it is a matter of WHEN, not IF. Kind of like Verizon forces you into a Family Share texting plan when you get a new phone. Oh, that's right, they don't. You still have the option to pay per line if you so choose.

Sprint CEO Dan said that Sprint will keep it's unlimited data plans for smartphones as long as he can hopley for ever.Sprint did a poll on this and most of Sprint customers want unlimited data for smartphones.Ceo Dan said that he will keep unlimited data for smartphones as long as the pepole want it.Dan did say that he would like to keep the unlimited data plans for smartphones for ever.
Shammo (Verizon's CFO) can be 100% confident that their plan to "migrate existing unlimited data customers to tiered data plans" WILL drive those customers away to other carriers - how will that impact Verizon's bottom line??? Verizon is losing touch with their long term customers just like Netflix did!
This is the Letter from Verizon an the part of it in Red is what Bugs me the Most! The Highlighted in Blue i figured this would be offered..
As we have stated publicly, Verizon Wireless has been evaluating its pricing structure for some time. Customers have told us that they want to share data, similar to how they share minutes today. We are working on plans to provide customers with that option and will introduce new plans later this year. When the new options are introduced, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to our customers purchasing handsets and signing a new contract. Customers who choose to purchase phones at full retail price and are currently on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan. The same pricing and policies will apply to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones. We will share specific details of the plans well in advance of their introduction so customers will have time to evaluate the plans and make the best decisions for their wireless service. It is our goal and commitment to continue to provide customers with the same high value service they have come to expect from Verizon Wireless.

The email in bullets:
Customers will not be automatically moved to new shared data plans. If a 3G or 4G smartphone customer is on an unlimited plan now and they do not want to change their plan, they will not have to do so.When we introduce our new shared data plans, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to customers when purchasing handsets at discounted pricing.Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan. The same pricing and policies will be applied to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.
You are lacky i have to stay with monster one more year!
Adios Verizon. Been with you since around 1999 or 2000, I could always live with paying a little more as I always felt I got a little more. No longer will I stay with you. Last year you only made 3 billion in profit while fighting the unions in the northeast. How much of a bonus does the CEO and board really need? Well you can live without my $1200 a year since it is so minimal. Good luck.
It sounds like the sales rep that processed your sale either A) didn't explain the new data charges to you or you didnt pay attention to the bill explanation. As an authorized agent for Verizon Wireless, I know that it is required for us, as employees, to explain those charges and have you sign for the changes. If we don't do that, we lose our jobs. There is no leway if you screw up someone's contract culpability, it's termination. I am by no means saying that it's your fault. You may very well have had an employee who breezed you through the new contract explanation very quickly. Also, the reason they will not change back your data agreement is because, at some point in the transaction, YOU SIGNED FOR THE CHANGE. We have to have a signature agreeing to new contract terms with EVERY new device sold, whether it be an upgrade or new activation, NO exceptions. I know I'm going to have a lot of hate mail on this post but please, look at it from the other side of the road. I explain everything fully to every customer who comes in to see me. At no point do I "swindle, rape, lie, cheat or railroad" my customers. I feel bad that you had such a terrible experience and I would love for you to stop in my store to see what an honest, thorough sale looks and feels like. If you are ever in MI, give me a holler!
