I have had my Droid Eris for a month now. My two children just received theirs last night. We noticed that no matter which notification tone we pick it always used the Ascend sound on all three phones. Does anyone else have this problem?
Have the exact same experience/problem. Haven't spoken to anyone at Verizon. Might be a software issue. They were supposed to update the firmware for Eris from 1.5 to 2.0 by end of January. No such luck. Not sure why. Keep getting runaround from Verizon in store reps.
I'm assuming you're noticing the notification sound play when you receive a text message. If that's the case, there's another place where you need to change the text notification sound. The only way I know how to get to it is to go to the messaging widget and select Menu » Settings » Select sound. If you want, you can set it to the default notification sound so that you only have to manage that from one place. Hope that helps!

First we'll address the message notification tone:
Open "Messages" Icon -> Menu key -> Settings -> Scroll down and click "Select Sound"...
Second, you can also change it so the volume is different from your Ringtone....
Main Settings Icon -> Sounds and Display -> Ringer Volume...Here you will see a checkbox asking you if you want to use your call volume for your notifications...If you uncheck it, it will present you with two volume sliders; one for Call Volume and one for Notification volume...
Remember to mark this as solved if the advice addresses your issue!
Good Luck!
