Need a New Phone..ARRGGGG!!!

My new every two came up on Saturday, and after two months of research, I sit here still using a Palm Centro that is as reliable as a Nexus/Incredible phone rumor for VW. Why? Because I can't decide on which phone to get. First off, I'm staying with Verizon. Sure, it costs more, but I don't mind paying for great service. I have decided on going to an Android phone. So which to get? My wife got the HTC Eris a month ago. Wow, a great phone! It may not be the fastest, has a slightly too small display, and screams for a software update (I KNOW, it will be out soon....HAH!) but it is the most underrated, big bang for the buck phone I've seen. But, my wife owns it, and I want something different. Moto Droid? Powerful and fast. Sadly, a case of function over form - this phone had to have been designed by cold war Russians ( or maybe Romulans?) Clunky, angular, heavy. Maybe Motorola should have put an actual Designer on the design team? So I check out the new Moto Devour. OK, this is a cool phone design! Angular, but functional and stylish. I like the keyboard and the sleek aluminum look. Sure, the display is too small and its a bit light. The killer is the lack of any real power. This is a phone I'd give to a kid. So there's the problem. Do I get the Moto Brick-Droid with all its power, or play copycat with my wife and get the underachieving but underrated Eris and pray that VW will actually release the update? I'd LOVE to wait for the Nexus to hit VW, but I really need to get a new phone soon.

Well, for my money you can't go wrong with the Droid. I do agree with you that it was designed by cold war Russians, though. BTW, that is a great description, I love it. Even with that shortcoming, I still love mine. I've gotten used to the weight.

One of the advantages to the Droid is the Gorilla Glass screen. Mine doesn't have a single scratch on it anywhere. I am pretty careful with it, but my previous Blackberry Pearl had been scratched a good bit in the same amount of time. Don't know if any of the other phones have the Gorilla Glass.

One suggestion for you is IF you have another phone laying around that you could use for a couple monthes until the next generation of Androids come out on Verizon, you could do that. This is assuming your Palm is unusable as a phone. I see you have already been waiting for a couple monthes, so this may be streching your patience though.

Funny, it used to be easy decisions on what phone to get on Verizon, since years ago they had the worst collection of phones of any carrier. Now that they've come into the 20th century with nice phones, the choice is harder. Ain't it always the way, never an easy out. :smileywink:

Good luck with your choice. The good part is that no matter what you choose, it'll be a substantial improvement over your present phone.

I would hold up another week, start of 2nd Q. I would think more info about new phones will be released. I wouldn't buy a Droid, thinking 2.1 is coming. Google's N1, sold by Google only, you might have to pay full retail. Go to the store and play with the phones, then look up reviews on the phones you liked and compare them to phones soon to be released.

My wife, my daughter, and I all have Eris's. Honestly, we've had fun "discovering" them together, as corny as that may sound. We all love them and don't know how we ever got by without them. I do firmly believe that 2.1 is coming "soon" and I do know it's really sweet, because I installed the 1st, and then 2nd version of the leaked 2.1 on my wife's Eris...now I'm the jealous one. The fact that the second "leaked" version fixes a major bug that existed in the first, and the fact that the new one seems pretty "bug-free" tells me that they are vey close at this point to releasing the OTA 2.1. Conspiracy theorists on other forums believe that the leak was intentional to let hackers get their hands on it and do the intensive beta testing while HTC and VZW sat back and watched. I'm not a conspiracy theorist myself, but it would be a heck of a smart idea, and seems to have worked well if that's really what it was. With all that said, I'm very intrigued by the Incredible, as it's basically an Eris on steroids. As much as I love the Eris and could live with it and be very happy (especially after the 2.1 rollout), a super-sized Eris with an extra shot of esspresso would be awesome! Depending on pricing, if the Incredible is all it looks like it will be, I may or may not be able to resist the temptation. I TRIED (really!) to love the Moto-Droid, but just couldn't compared to the Eris. If you already know you don't like it, why buy it?? The Eris is an awesome phone, and much moreso with 2.1. *IF* you can wait for the Incredible, I would. Even if it gets here and is too pricey, or not what you expected, at that point, they'll be blowing out 2.1 Eris's for a song. I bet April will be the magic month. MHO

Just got back from the local Verizon retailer - again. A really nice guy. He said (yea, I know....who cares) that the Nexus (and maybe the iPhone) probably won't be available until summer. He uses and loves the Droid, and his co-worker loves his Eris. Right now I'm no closer to a new phone than before. I guess I will drag my feet for another week or two, putting up with my Palm's dropped calls, self-disconnecting Bluetooth, frequent lockups and random re-boots for a bit more. If I were to "pull the trigger" today, I'd have to say the Droid is pulling ahead. I just really like the display size and speed over the Eris. I'm really never going to be a power user, so there may not be any real advantage in waiting for the Nexus One. I'm not sure if the better specs will be worth a possible higher price and lack of in-store availability. I just wish I didn't have to lock into a two year commitment to get the Droid and use the discounts and special pricing. With the technology advancing so rapidly, two years is a loooong time. If it turns out that I'm not happy with it ( my Palm was GREAT ...for about the first 11 months or so), I cringe with the thought of getting stuck again. So, I will wait just a little bit more, read a little bit more, and keep trying to figure it out. Thanks for the helpful postings. I may end up tossing a coin. :smileywink:

FWIW, my wife's Eris with 2.1 is much smoother and faster than my stock 1.5 Eris.

Are you a little girl? Who cares it's a little clunky looking? I love my Motorola Droid. I have had it over two months now with ZERO problems. The GPS navigation is great. I love docking it in my car dock and using the navigation while listening to Pandora through my FM radio. I resolved the handsfree dialing issue with Voice Dialer HF and Button Shortcut. My Droid has NEVER dropped a call. I don't consider it too heavy and it fits nicely in my front pants pocket. There is nothing about this Droid I don't like.

Do you need a "manly" looking phone to make you feel manly? {no personal comments, please}, but some of us prefer something a little less intrusive.

I didn't pick my phone to make me feel anything. I bought it to make phone calls and connect to the internet. The other functions are all plusses. I went from a RAZR to a Droid and the size and weight of the Droid is not an issue at all. And again, who cares if it's not the sleekest phone on the market? I bought if for me, not someone looking over my shoulder.

I would choose the Droid from all the VZW Android offerings right now. The main reason is I could not use a touch-screen-only device. And I agree that the Devour seems like a kids' phone.

Oh just great. Just when I have narrowed my choices, somebody in another thread says that his buddy at Verizon is testing an Incredible! Possibly released in two weeks? Now throw another possibility in the mix. I was honestly thinking the Incredible was like the Loch Ness monster - lots of sightings, but all rumors. OK, call me optimistic, but I'm going to wait a couple of weeks. Droid, Incredible, Nexus....I'm going to have a new phone soon.
