Why would Verizon start charging an upgrade fee?

You are not charged this fee anytime you want to change your phone, only when you purchase a subsidized phone in exchange for signing a new contract. You can change between phones as often as you would like with no charge. I have been switching between a Droid Razr Maxx HD and a Galaxy SIII every 10 days or so for the last 2 months without being charged.

Actually they only charge you if you take an upgrade discount. Also if you don't want to be a Verizon customer exactly were are you going to go? At&t? Sorry they charge $36 to upgrade. Sprint? They also charge $36 to upgrade. T-mobile? Well no upgrade fee but no $600 phones for $200 either. You have to pay the full $600.

Good afternoon LibbyRoxy. I am sorry that the $30 upgrade fee is causing you such distress. I want to assure you this isn't just a random fee that we threw out there. There is a reason behind it and I would be more than happy to discuss that with you today.

The $30 upgrade fee was introduced on April 22nd 2012. The main reason for this fee is because the devices we offer are becoming more advanced and therefore more expensive. We purchase the devices at full retail, which ranges from $300-$700 dollars. For example the iPhone 5 is $649.99. We sell it to our customers who are upgrade eligible at $199.99. That is a huge discount that we can offer you and the $30 upgrade fee allows us to continue to do so. It is a fee that is a wireless industry standard and we held off as long as we could, but I am happy to say that ours is lower compared to our competition.

The upgrade fee also supports some of our other services such as the wireless workshops offered in our stores, back up assistant plus, our around the clock customer service, and the upkeep of our industry leading network.

You will not be billed a $30 upgrade fee if you purchase the device at full retail. I understand that purchasing a device at full retail could cause financial stress so I do have another option. You can trade in your current device via our trade in program. Whatever your phone is valued at, you can apply that towards the upgrade fee. Sometimes it covers the cost completely.

For devices purchased in the store or over the phone you do have to send in a rebate form to get the $50 rebate. If you order the device online the discount is instant and I would suggest purchasing your device online to get the best deals.

I hope that now that I provided you with an option to take the pressure of the upgrade fee off that you do choose to upgrade your device. We have quite the extensive line up and I know we have the right phone for you. Let me know if you need additional assistance.

That sounds all good for the iphone & 4g devices but for the person just using a basic phone (trying to be smart to save money- gets the shaft!- I'm sure the basic phones will be taking away from all the carriers soon- :smileysad:

People that just want basic phones are better off going with something like Staight Talk or Net10.

While I appreciate your explanation, NickB, I think that it is a load of bull hockey. The entire purpose of offering free upgrades is customer retention (it is a well known business model, so do not insult us by denying it). You and your competition have been engaging in this behavior for years. Your offer of a new phone every two years has seen me upgrade from a basic flip phone to a phone with a keyboard to a Blackberry Storm and then to a Droid X. There are now three phones on my plan, two Droids and a basic phone. We share 1400 minutes and friends and family between us. Each of the Droids have unlimited data. This plan costs us $4500 during the course of our contract. To "upgrade" our phones with the same setup (2 smartphones and one basic phone) will cost us $90 in upgrade fees and an additional $20+ per month. Yes, we will be sharing unlimited voice and texts, but we will be paying more per month for less data (right now we pay $30 per line for unlimited data, but under your new plan that will be $35 per line for 4Gb each month). Basic Service under your new "Share Everything" plan will start at $180 a month for us, before taxes while my service now runs between $155 and $162.

I would buy that, but for the following: 1. I have never seen a workshop offered. I might not be looking in the right place. Truth be told, if they are anything like your online workshops, they are completely useless. 2. Back-up assistant plus is really not useful, at least not in my opinion. The one time I have had to use it (switching from the Blackberry Storm to the Dorid X), it was not compatible. Not only is it not useful, it is not needed, as all android contacts are shared with your g-mail account and automatically imported to your new device. After a bit of research, I have found that Apple does the same thing (albeit in a different way). 3. Verizon Wireless, like all major corporations, has a strategic plan for capital improvements (i. e. new 4G antenna or new towers) that is built into the service fees: 24 hour customer service is also built into the service fee. The claim from Verizon Wireless that they are not able to keep up with the advances in cellular technology are, at least in my opinion, bogus, as Verizon Wireless in supposed to be an innovator in the field. Your contention that Verizon Wireless pays full retail for the phones you offer for free or at a discount is also a bit of a sticking point for me...I would bet that you are, in fact, paying a substantially discounted wholesale price.

Verizon Wireless should just stick to giving us a free or discounted phone, with no upgrade fee, in return for us continuing to spend thousands of dollars a year on your service.

That's the entitlement attitude I'm talking about. Verizon is under ZERO obligation to offer you ANY kind of discount free or otherwise. Where do you get that you're entitled to a 100% free phone? And frankly if you can't deal with that then there are other providers out there.

My assumption is that you work for Verizon Wireless, Brian68, which is fine. Calling my comments the "entitlement attitude you are talking about," sounds like it was meant to offend me. I have become used to being rewarded for my loyalty. This attitude was fostered by my previous cellular carrier and by my new one, Verizon wireless. The phones they sell are only meant to last about two years, at which point they give us a discount or a free phone to renew our contract, which is where the real profits are. Just using my own account as an example, Verizon Wireless will be getting an additional $240-300 per year (now multiply that by the number of customers in the Verizon Wireless network).

Free or discounted phones are also a boon for Verizon Wireless in another way: all of that bloatware that they package on a new phone makes them a ton of money.

Had the $30 fee been per account instead of per line, none of us would have balked. In fact, if they would have just come out and said "hey, we just want to make more money for our shareholders," most of us would have not balked. This is, after all, pure greed on the part of the carrier.

And, just so you know, when I check my upgrade options, the only option available is the "share everything" plan, which takes away unlimited data. It is the only plan listed on the Verizon Wireless website.

Fooey. The upgrade fee is just a marketing trick to make the base price of the phone look cheaper.

Apparently some Verizon marketing droid thinks I'm stupid enough to decide to purchase a $50 phone and then not mind in the slightest when an extra $30 fee shows up at the end of the purchase process.

If the upgrade fee really is for recouping network expenses, blah blah ad nauseum, then why not just include it in the base price of the phone?

Because it'd make the phone look more expensive, that's why. What a cheap, cynical trick.

Guess I'm hanging onto my existing phone for awhile longer.

Enough already about the upgrade fee. It's part of the price of being a cell phone customer in 2013. If you don't want to pay it don't accept a subsidized price the next time your upgrade or search around and see if you can find a provider who better meets your needs. Nobody here can do anything about it anyway, and Verizon is not going to drop the fee.

It never ceases to amaze me how Americans just bend over and accept getting reamed by whatever these Corporations foist on them. There is only one purpose for any kind of FEE over and above the advertised price of a plan. To raise the price and thereby the profit margins to appease investor demands for higher returns and dividends, with as minimal cap-ex as possible. Customer churn is minimized when the base price is held fixed over a term of years, while price increases are hidden in FEES. And what lovely names they have slapped on them too. Activation $35. Access $40, Upgrade $30, Regulatory Recovery $0.16? $1.51? $5.32?, ka-ching, ka-ching, ka-ching. Almost makes me want to tattoo a big fat red star on my forehead and move to China.

I stay for the present because compared to the current Share Plans, my bill is cheap, had it for years. So it doesn't hurt quite so much (yet). Should Verizon decide to eliminate grandfathered plans then I may well NOT stay anymore. As I said, the competition looks better every day, and at the end of my current contract term, AT&T Sprint & TMobile LTE will be petty well built out. And at this point i'm pretty peeved that I'm still not allowed to tether on 2 Gig tier I have, whereas TMobile allows tethering on all of their current tiered plans, and would run me $60 as opposed to $100 for the same service level with VZW. >>comment removed; please keep it family-friendly<<

Why not just add the price to every phone? A phone that you say is free is not truly free and shouldn't be advertised as such.I believe the Better Business Bureau might call you out on this.

Now that other providers are letting their customers upgrade whenever they like, how can Verizon which makes their customers wait 2 years (for phones that their competitors usually have before them ) and then charge them a fee on top of that.

You are penalizing loyalty for staying with Verizon (new customers aren't charged the additional $30).

You are driving your customers into switching providers!

Contrary to popular belief, Verizon will let you upgrade at ANY time you would like. They WILL NOT, however, give you a subsidy when you upgrade unless you have completed your most recent contract.

Additionally, the phone prices other providers are charging to upgrade whenever you would like are CONSIDERABLY more than the price of a phone at a discount when signing a 2 yr contract. You either finance the phone over a period of time to get the price down or pay it all up front.

Verizon is ALSO introducing a similar upgrade plan, but as with the other providers you will no longer get the subsidy you are used to receiving when making this purchase.

We are not trying to be sneaky at all, krugerio. And we definitely don't want you to leave. Again - there is no discount on the phones, so stop saying there is. The full retail cost is built into the life of the contract. Just because there isn't a line item on the bill that says "Balance on the price of the device" doesn't mean it isn't there.

You want to make it seem as if we get the same prices as new customers for phones by posting the same price and then adding your little subscript about the upgrade fee. You're trying to disguise the fact that new customers get a better deal. This is why people jump from provider to provider because all the providers seem to want is to add new customers not maintain the ones they have.

All I'm saying is that you can easily fix your web page to show the true upgrade price.You can easily make a differnt page for new customers that show the price they would be charged.for a phone..There would never be a phone that costs $0 for an upgrade because you are charging any ongoing customer $30 for that phone bottom line. This fee is not a tax that is outside your control, you impose it and say it's a fee rather than adjusting the price as you should do.

As many users mentioned the true cost of the phone is buried in the cost of our 2 year contract so don't tell us that $30 covers the reduced price we get. Truth in advertising is what we want, not deception.

Just so you know T-mobile does NOT charge 600 for a phone its 300 max for a phone thru them and you don't have to pay it up front. they will finance it for you and you pay an extra 5-25 a month on your bill to pay for your phone. they also allow you to upgrade every 6 months if you want/need to with no fee AND only charge 70 a month for unlimited EVERYTHING. By far a better deal. yeah you have to buy your phone but so what your saving money every month and not just a few dollars either i'm talking 50+ savings a month

This boggles my mind too. Why not just charge $229 for a phone that used to be $199 to "upgrade". This is so similar to the airlines. Charging baggage fees and other fees.

At least they didn't call it a "Federal Upgrade Fee" to make it appear to be a tax!! They do that with a bunch of charges. I used to own a small ISP and disputed my line provider once and asked them to explain each charge. I even went so far as to ask them to prove the "Federal" fees were indeed being passed to the Government. Their lawyers turned red as they "let the cat out of the bag". Did you know that any company can make up any charge and add it to the invoice and call it anything they want, except a "Tax"? It's a way to pad the bill and mislead their customers to blame the government.

You never know what a company will do if they lose enough paying customers. If you don't want to hear us complain you don't have to look. but we have every right to fight against things we believe to be unfair and wrong.

A lot of us are waiting out our contract because they will charge you out the butt for leaving early. but if they don't drop this fee by the time my contract is up i'm gone. and i'll take every person i can with me because thats our right as customers.

This is just a symptom of the greater problem. When the government allowed all these mergers and created really a duopoly (ATT/VZW), you really have no choice but to take what is available. I travel extensively and have found that ATT and VZW are the only 2 carriers that cover the areas I go to. So, to say to me, "Go elsewhere if you don't like it here", is patronizing at best.

However, if you do not pay the fees a company charges, you won't have service with them and would have no way of knowing if they are providing the excellence you demand.

You don't know what your talking about in reference to T-Mobile.

My phone cost $657 plus tax. My service is $70.00 of which $50 is for unlimited talk and text, $20 is unlimited data + 500mb of teathering per month plus taxes around $74.98 then I get 15% off corporate discount. Total cost is $58.00

To say the higest you pay is $300 is ludicrous.

They also charge $35 activation fee which when I signed up was waived.

That EIP (Equipment Installment Plan) is you pay $99.00 and the total tax on the device and T-Mobile also charges $10 for a SIM kit. Its no kit just something you need to have service with them. Which I have never been charged for with Verizon Wireless.

On the T-Mobile website TODAY, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is listed as $600 full retail price. You are correct in that you do not have to pay for it up front, but instead have to pay $25/month for 24 months which STILL comes out to a total of $600. With that in mind, I agree with Elector in that it is ludicrous to say you will pay $300 max for a phone from T-Mobile. You can go to the T-Mobile website to see that is just not true.

Additionally, if you find you do not like the service and decide to leave, while there is NO ETF, you WILL have to pay the balance on your phone. Decide to leave after 4 months and making only 4 months of $25 payments, you will have to pay the balance of $500 on your phone in order to leave. While that is techincally NOT an ETF, it is quite a large sum to pay in order to leave a provider.

From what I've seen T-Mobile is the ONLY carrier that is somewhat honest in their pricing. If you buy the device outright, your monthly cost is less expensive than if you have it "subsidized" a la AT&T and Verizon. If you want to buy it on time, they add that to the cost of your monthly bill.

ATT and VZW both do not give you a reduced monthly bill if you purchase the device outright. To me that is gouging the customer. in VZW's case, they still have you locked in if you but a $700 phone!! You can't use it anywhere else. Sure you can sell it, but you'll lose a bunch of money. Call that an ETF cost!

This is why I am so unhappy with Verizon. I will not ever buy a device outright as it will cost me $400 more for the 2 year period of my contract. I have been eligible for an upgrade since May 8 and my contract ends Sept 8 and I want the HTC One. To make the least expensive per contract year, I need to upgrade every 20 months. I know I could keep my phone forever and duck the $199 + $30 upgrade fees, but technology marches forward and my phone is running slow now with 4.1.2 on it.

Verizon is the most expensive carrier out there, and I guess their network justifies the cost. But if we are to pay that money, I do believe they should allow us the best devices available.

But then, I'm just a lowly customer whose opinion really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of maximizing profit margins for the CEO and major shareholders.

Took my 93 year old father in to get a new phone today. He's had the same one for about 8 years(finally conked out)...never had an upgrade. All he needs is the most basic phone(Not an expensive Iphone etc) for emergencies. He knew he had to sign a 2 year contract, he actually called it his lifetime contract, but we were both floored when he was charged the upgrade fee. I called Verizon customer service and was told "it's not an upgrade fee, it's a transfer fee!" The in store transfer took less than one minute. That's $30 for one minute. I was then told there was nothing they could do at this time and to call back at the end of his billing cycle. Are you freaking kidding me? My family has 6 phones/contracts with Verizon...We are not impressed.

A basic phone with no data are cheap. If you had paid full price or did pay full price the contract is zero. If you go back and return the basic phone he can pay the $35 restocking fee, do not wait past 14 days for any reason. Verizon is trying to string you out past the buyers 14 window. You could always get a cdma version phone (basic and no data) from any other place and just swap out your ESN/MEID number from your new phone to replace the old. You can do this from the http://www.verizonwireless.com website

Or purchase one of those cheap all you can eat prepaid plans or check out http://www.consumercellular.com or go to any Sears stores and cgeck them out. Get out of that contract right now.

It really bothers me too, because I don't even want a smart phone. I just would like a regular phone, and the $30 "upgrade" fee is not really an upgrade, nor is it going to give me services that I'll actually use. I just feel cheated and scammed -- especially since I have a single phone account, which you pay through the nose for anyway.

You can also choose to purchase a new phone at full retail price.

For a single phone line with a basic phone on it, you may want to look at the offerings in pre-paid plans. You may end up paying a LOT less.

Update: Just returned from the Verizon store and the manager, Mike was very helpful. I canceled my dad's contract, and the manager waived the restocking fee. I got my dad a Tracfone for $20, and a 60 minutes card. He will now only pay $7 dollars a month instead of $30 a month.

Again, I have to thank Mike for his assistance. He was willing to help my dad out in order to keep him as a customer, but Dad just wanted out.

I recently dropped my very cheap samsung alias 2 in a swimming pool 12 days before my upgrade was due so I went to the verizon store to get a new phone as I need it for work and could not wait 12 days....I thought they would be understanding and helpful and maybe waive the 12 days for a customer of over 10 years...I was wrong I ended up paying $250 for a Revere 2 flip phone..not internet no I-phone just a basic flip phone...the joke around my office now is how I got ripped off....unfortunately I am stuck in a contract or I would leave verizon immediately!!!!!

I suppose you could have paid the ETF, hopefully less than $250, and gone elsewhere the same day!
