Upgrading to Droid..a bit apprehensive

I am thinking of upgrading from the Dare to the Droid in a couple of weeks and I have researched alot of threads and would like to know what are the main pros and cons to watch for with the droid. Also I have seen some ppl say that they've added itune music to their phones..what about music from zune??

The pros I think are it is a phone that can do a lot of things, your computer in your pocket. The phone is a lot of fun. The cons, there is a learning curve to get used to how the phone works- but these forums help. For music I use the windows media player. It syncs up with the phone easy enough and loads all my songs with album art.

Although I have never personally used or even looked at the program in relation to an Android phone, you might check out a program called "The Missing Sync" that I believe allows syncing a lot of different programs to your phone. I saw a blob on a tech site somewhere in the last week that the program has been updated to support Android. If I remember right, I had a client years ago with a Palm Treo who was using this program for syncing contacts and other info to his palm, and he liked it a lot and pretty much solved all his problems with the Treo and syncing his data. I don't know how much the program is, but there might be a demo you can try before purchasing.

If I remember right, the blob mentioned the ability to sync music with itunes. Again, I can't verify this, I have access to neither itunes, nor a windows or mac PC to try the missing sync program. (Nor any need for such :smileyhappy: )

An Android device will show up the same as a "USB Thumb Drive" when you hook it to a computer, allowing you to transfer data easily from your file manager, even if you do not have any dedicated sync program.

Before you switch, because lord knows we dont need someone coming back saying that "this sucks", "i'm returning it, it does nothing i want", etc (sorry but alot of people say that), you need to know if the droid is what you want. so go to the store and seriously play with it (and the eris too)

however, if it is what you want then great. if you are business orientated, it achieves so much from DocumentsToGo, mileage trackers, spreadsheets, advanced calculators, free google maps for navigation, etc.

need a break from the monotony? games are great, Pandora radio, slacker radio, etc...

download it all, you have 16gb of memory. i have 29 apps on mine and i have only used 3.5 gigs so far (that even includes my ebooks and some of my music)

now you will experience problems however there many people out here to help you (or at androidforums.net). just remember, a reboot or factory reset usually solves many of the problems.

if you are having constant problems, dont hesitate, return and exchange it.

post what city you live in and ask for which stores to stay away from (this is because some stores may have bad batches of droids so there is no need to go there). i go to best buy, i have never had a problem with them.

take the time to love the Droid and the Droid will love you back. i returned my first one because of the camera issue but in reality i could have waited for the update, but didnt. so everyone has problems. the droid is an electronic device built by humans. so there will always be some form of error involved. no need to get frustrated. just ask.

Actually, your programs are not installed to the SD card, programs (at least the way Android is currently implemented without rooting your phone and running a program such as apps2sd), are stored in and ran from the phones internal, and limied storage. The data generated by the programs can be stored to SD card, but not the programs themselves.

There is a practical limit to the number of apps you can install.

sorry let me clarify. yes the apps are downloaded onto the phone but the processes are stored on the sd card, from what i understand. and pretty much all the apps i use are in some way used for work, with my numerous excel, word, and pdf files and even the games for the downtime.

but yes there is a limit and you are correct in that.

Thanks to all of you who have replied so far..I am really interested in the Eris..was thinking of switching to the iphone but once the Eris was revealed I started looking into it. I am not an on the go business person but i would like a phone that has the ability to do what i need to do when I need it..such as...texting..email..music..and other stuff that the Dare doesnt! I am a bit envious of the people on her who say they have all these apps on their phones already!! So do most people download whatever is free or do they really sit down and think about what they want the phone to do for them and then download the apps? Are there apps out there that can allow me to work with word documents?

For the office applications, you can use DataViz's Documents to Go for both the Eris and the Motorola Droid.
