droid eris can't delete messages

i have running threads of over 1,000 messages from different people. i can't delete any of them. when i click on one thread and press delete, it just freezes up. i'll then try and go back and it will take a while. then i will go to messages and all my threads will be deleted and the phone will act up. if i turn the phone off then on again, all the messages are still there.

It might be that the phone is still deleting the messages when you force it to turn off.  If the OS is very busy deleting messages and freeing up space in storage, it may be extremely sluggish for a while - possibly minutes.

 

By forcing it off, or especially if you ever pulled the battery instead of simply shutting it off, you might have corrupted the storage partition the phone.

 

If deleting the messages, and waiting 5 or 10 minutes to see if the phone starts "acting normal" again, doesn't fix your problem, I would suggest going to Settings, then Programs, and find the "Messaging" application.  Click on it, and you should have an opton to clear data and/or cache.  Click on both options of they are avaialble. 

 

If that does not work, you  may need to do a factory restore on the phone to fix the file corruption caused by forcing it off while it was deleting and modifying the file.  (Settings, security, factory reset) - Be warned, if you do this, all downloaded programs, pictures, music etc will be wiped from the phone, so be sure to back up any pictures, music etc. first... Any apps that you purchased are tied to your Gmail account and can be re-downloaded from the market for free, as long as  you use the same Gmail account/password you did when you setup the phone.
