Droid Eris

If you are seriously considering purchasing the Droid Eris……Think again!

I have never had so much trouble with a phone….and I have averaged a new phone every year for over 20 years now. Not because of quality, but for the newest functions and technology. My previous phone was the blackberry storm…..I no problem traveling from one county to the next continually talking (hands free on my Bluetooth). But, the Droid Eris does not respond to traveling….via the Bluetooth capabilities. Not only does it disconnect…every time! But, it freezes up. Then I have to take out the battery…all while driving. It takes another 30 minutes sometimes before I can reconnect…because the Droid refuses to receive signals….It is not a coverage issue! I have traveled between San Diego and LA for years and never had this problem. My phone is my life line to my work and all the decisions that need to be made immediately. Here are just a few of the many other problems with the Droid Eris.

Goes to a black/blank screen instantly….all the time (just moving the phone) I push all buttons and nothing happens. It Freezes up all the time. I have to take out the battery to reset.
Makes random calls all the time. Even while I am talking on the phone with someone else.
Touch screen rarely functions
When I have completed a call, the droid makes another call back a couple of seconds later.
I can not receive any of my voice messages.
Goes dead around 10 am everyday!....Many times I am not in the car…and I have no way to charge the phone…when I am at job sites.
It changes its own settings all the time…..now it does not ring at all!

I own the Eris and granted I've had it a short time..I haven't experienced any of the problems you are describing. It's been an awesome phone.

Perhaps you got a lemon or a defective battery. If you are going to toss it maybe you want to hold out for the Incredible coming out soon.

I have had my Eris now since December and have not had these issues. My phone never forgets settings, I have never double called anyone even once. I have hung up by mistake but that's cause I hovered over the "end call" button and hit it. You can't blame the phone for that. I have never had a call drop. The touch screen only took a little getting use to. I have google voice and it not only plays back the audio on the phone but it does a read along with the text as the words in the voice mail are played. Depending how I use the phone I have had it last for 2 days before charging. Learn to manage your power usage.You can buy two other batteries which both have higher capacity but one fits with normal back while the other has a huge back to fit the huge battery.

Sounds like you have a battery issue.

hi Smilie, i've had my Eris going on 2 months now. i love the phone. not sure if anyone else agrees with me, but its funny, just this am i was telling someone i don't think this phone is good for a business person who does a lot of things with their phone b/c of the battery life. i'm able to get a day but not more and i don't do a lot with the phone. there have been suggestions made which i have done but still rarely get beyond a day. please listen to the others on here b/c maybe the suggestions i was given to prolong the battery life may work on your device, just not mine for some reason. i have gone 1 1/4 days on one charge twice in the 2 mos.

as for your other issues...the only other one i had was the random calling of someone. mine has done it only one time. other than that, no problems with this fun device. i love this phone and hopefully you can get some good advice here but you may have to look at something else if it's not suiting your needs or take it back to the store for them to check it out to see whether its defective or not.

I have had my Eris since November and have not experienced any of these problems that you are complaining about, neither has any of my friends who have the device. Maybe you got a faulty phone

We have three Eris's in my house and we all love them. No such problems as you've described. Had them since December and haven't had a problem yet, other than spending too much time playing with them. Sounds like you got a defective phone.

With your list of problems, I woul suggest a swap out and see if you get better results. I strongly encourage the 1750 MAmp battery, it is the best. I don't get two days like other people do on here though. It will give me at least 12 great hours of browsing,txting and FB chat with no problem and power to spare till I plug it in at night, and I don't get home till almost midnight on work nights, but I am up and going by 9am the next morning. ANY smartphone now a days will nto have th best battery time, I dont see how anyone thinks they will if they use all the options possible. I use my bluetooth with my bluetooth enabled helmet for riding my motorcycle. I can listen to music at 90 MPH or I can talk to a caller if need be(I slow down for that because the mic doesn't do so well at that speed, and talking is more distracting I slow down anyway) I don't have dropped calls. My phone has been working great and I am looking forward to the update once it is released. I do miss the option of voice dial on bluetooth, but hopefulyl that will be working soon, and an EQ/audio player would be a huge improvement. It wirks, but I liek to fine tune when I can. I can understand your complaint of th ephone with what you have expereinced, try to replacement and if you don't like it at all anyway try a different phone. IF you do need a long batery the 3500 is an excellent choice it doesn't change the size drastically. Picture the battery on top of itself and that gives you the depth it adds. I'm not sure of the actual time, cause I didn't get that one. Some people think it is huge, and the Eris is a very slim phone as it comes. Good luck and I hope you find a phone that works with you and let's you be you..lol

I have had my Eris for less than three months, but I have had almost none of the issues you are having. Dropped calls... Yes. I had those with my last Verizon phone. It was a Moto 755. You have dropped calls with ever phone company out there. When they switch towers, when the airways get "flooded" etc. You won't overcome that unless you get your own cell phone tower.

I travel for a living and I have been in several states and have no serious issues. VA, DC, PA, WV (nothing works good in WV), MD, etc.

As far as the Bluetooth problem. Mine works better with my Eris than it did with my Moto 755 but it doesn't pair as well. What I mean by that, with my Moto 755 I could hear when I was dialing and knew my Bluetooth was paired. With my Eris, I actually have to make a call to make sure it is working right.

This, along with other issues are suppose to be addressed with the 2.1 upgrade. We shall see.

All in all, it sounds to me like you have a bad phone. Have them send you a new phone.

With the battery. The Eris battery has to be "trained". I know that sounds weird. I had never heard anything like it before either. When I first got my phone, it didn't last 5 hours before it was dead. I let it go dead at least 5 times and each time it lasted longer and longer. Now I can have my phone on for more than 24 hours and it is fine. IF I am in an area with good coverage. As with any phone, if it has to keep searching for service, your battery will die fast.

Screen going blank. I have never had that to happen. Nor has my phone ever froze where I had to remove my battery.

I would suggest another phone for you. You seem to have gotten a bad phone. It does happen. When I first started with Verizon 3 years ago, I went through three DIFFERENT phones before I got one that I was pleased with and worked right for me.

Hey Smilie, Sorry to hear about the problems you are having. I have not had my Eris very long, but so far have had no problems at all. No freeze ups, touch pad works fine......Sounds like you need to visit Verizon with these complaints if you haven't done so and get a new phone! Yours sounds defective!

hey my mom's Eris makes random calls in the midle of the night to random people on her call list including her associates. I told her to go int the store and she has 4 times and they keep telling her basically that it is not happening or that it is her. she sleeps w/ the phone charging in the other room, how is she doiing that. This is the most plaugeing problem of the few that she has but she still likes the phone. finally after 2 hours on teh phone w/ tech support we wiped and reloaded the phone and they said finally if it happens again they will send her a new one. it seems like not evry one is havong this problem but enought where i can find 20+ with a quick google search. not a high number but stil it is happening.

I can reciprocate your issues with the Eris. My wife and I both have had multiple issues with the Droid and it seems to only be getting worse as time passes. Ever since we did the first update to the phoen everything went downhill. We both took our cells to the local Verizon store to tackle the problem. The service tech seemed knowledgable. He ran a few connectivity tests. He then recommended a hard reset. He said that all info would be backed up to our Google account. That was completely false. One in particular, the Note Everything App, had several paaswords, personal account info for banking, mortage, school, my work. All gone. And, out of stupidity , I hadn't backed it up anywhere else.

Issues with phone:

SLOW PROCESSING!!!!! I mean, my blackberry was faster than this. It looks cool, it has a touch screen, other than that its a paper weight.

Slow internet. When pushing a hyperlink on a website it would highlight or activate something close to it. What a hassle. website loss of connectivity, freazing, force closing peroidically

Phone calls will drop, I will take the cell away from my face to put on speaker phone and it will stay in the off screen function.

Screen will freeze in between hortizontal and vertical screen during texting or internet usage.

Sad part is the only correction that Verizon can offer is resetting the phone which does nothing with its functionality.

I could go on but I waste enough energy on this phone as it is.

I so totally agree.....i have the same problems as far as the freezing and having a mind of its own. Constantly force closing!! At first was very happy with all the apps but, that seems to be all this phone is good for!! Battery time sucks, can not go a whole day with it!! I recieve a text and can not respond, nor make phone calls. I am sooooo very disappointed with this phone!!

I have the same problems with my Eris as many of you...

* Random freezes

*Screen doesn't come back on when you bring the phone down from your ear... you have to push the hang up button to get the screen back..so much for your call. Don't do phone banking on this thing, no way to enter answers to the prompts. I have re-calibrated the gravity setting several times and the proximity sensor is clean and clear.

*Despite a task killer, the battery life sucks! If a message - text or email - comes thru, the phone will stay on until you clear it or the phone dies. I don't keep my phone with me at work, so guess which one happens the most?!

*TERRIBLE reception. I have yet to see a full 4 bars on this phone.. usually its only 1 or two resulting in lots of dropped calls. My neighbor also has Verizon, she has no problems with reception so its not the area.

*Touch screen is either super sensitive or unresponsive.

I have 14 months before I qualify for an upgrade... unless I get fed up and head to eBay sooner, in which case I won't be continuing my service with Verizon once the contract expires. I had a few problems with my AT&T after a move to a new city, I followed a friends advice and switched to Verizon...BIG MISTAKE!

The answer to Verizon's "Can you hear me now?"... with this phone, the answer is PROBABLY NOT!

What do you mean, "despite a task killer?" Task killers are some of the biggest battery drainers on the market, and they cause your phone to become slow and unstable. You shouldn't be using one. If you get rid of it, your phone's performance will improve. It won't be perfect because the Eris does suck, but it'll definitely be better than what you've got now.

The Eris isn't Verizon's fault, it's HTC's. You chose bad hardware--stick with Motorola or Samsung next time--and whoever told you to get a task killer ensured that a bad phone would be even worse.

I'm about to get my Eris replaced AGAIN because it keeps erratically scrolling to the left. I've had the Eris since about November, and this particular handset I've only had for about 4 months. I can't wait to get a Motorola next time...

I understand your frustrations and I apologize about the problems you are having with your device.

First lets try a soft reset on the device.

Press and hold the End / Power key.

Touch Power off.

Touch OK.

Press the End / Power key to power on the device.

Next lets try updating your device to make sure you have the latest updates::

From the main screen, touch Menu
Touch Settings
Touch About Phone
Touch System Updates

Then could I get you to dial *228 send and option 1 on your device, and then dial *228 send and option 2.

Then try to stopping the running applications you are not using to save battery power.

From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located in the lower-left).
Touch Settings.

Touch Applications.

Touch Manage applications.

Touch the desired application.

Touch Force stop.

You would want to stop programs that you are not using.

Then try clearing system memory by deleting unwanted messages and pictures.

These steps should improve the overall performance of the phone.

That's all good and well, but when its clearly a programming error, not just an error on the users' end, saying "Just reset your device every so often" is not a fix. I've had my Eris since November of last year - it was an early Christmas present, in fact - and it hasn't functioned properly since the day I unwrapped it. Currently I am forced to remove my battery 2-3 times a day due to it freezing, the touch application malfunctioning, or the internet magically ceasing to work. I'm seriously considering canceling my Verizon account and buying a Track phone, which is a horrible alternative, but considering in the area I live Verizon is the only viable choice due to reception issues, its definitely an enticing option. I have spent countless hours on the phone with tech support to no avail, I adamantly refuse to ever set foot in my local Verizon store again due to the employees being both rude and EXTREMELY unhelpful, and now I am told that the only way I can have anything done is to pay for my insurance to replace my phone... with another Eris! Isn't the fact that I cannot dial out enough? That when I text the touch screen crashes EVERY TIME? When I press the button to snap a photo with my Eris's camera, it takes something like 30 seconds before the picture is actually taken? My ringtones work about 50% of the time? The list of issues I have could go on all day. Suffice it to say, if you're considering this phone, don't bother. Go throw a handful of $20's into the ocean... you'll be getting as much value for your money as you would from purchasing this paperweight.

I have had my phone since june of this year...well this past weekend it went crazy....freezing up. Stuck on one of the 5 screens. Couldnt text or even make a call. It was useless taking the battery out. Just continued to do the same thing each and everytime. It would work for a few minutes then do it again. So I took it up to verizon where the "employee" just said she would order me another. Not even checking to see if they had some in stock. So I have endured this blessed phone for 2days. Just went back up there today, cause i need my phone for work. A different employee told me that they had some in stock and didnt understand why this other employee didnt just give me one they had. so far since 1pm today it has been okay. I lost all my contacts. which stinks they couldnt import them from my gmail account. I cant seem to get the screen to come up while on a call to take it off of speakerphone...but with this new one we'll see.

I would rather down grade my phone. When I get the chance I prob will. I hate this phone most of the time. Other times it could be useful.

I also have the eris. I thought it was a great phone until I instaled the first update vz sent me and then all hell broke loose with ym phone

It started freezing, scrolling the screen to the far left and not allowing me to scroll back with either the track ball or the touch screen, app freezing and force close messages all the time.

I contacted vz on this and the had me master reset my phone which worked for about three days and then the problems started all over again and have not stoped since and i have reset the phone several times which no longer does any good.

I am just holding out for my early up grade... three more months then bye bye eris

I'm having a problem with my Droid Eris. Cannot connect to the Mobile Network. It says it's turning on but never turns on. When I'm away from my Wifi I can't connect to the internet because of this error.

Verizon, I think this is a software issue, please fix this issue, we're paying your company for service which we are NOT receiving. We need a fix immediately.

I've spent time on the phone with Tech Support and am still having problems with Mobile Network not turning on. Works great with Wifi. We've tried everything from soft boot to hard boot, reprogramming etc. PLEASE SEND A FIX TO MY PHONE NOW!! I'm tired of this. I don't think I'm the only one.

With the mobile network turned on dial *#*#4636#*#* (you may have to press send), then press phone information. In the next screen press menu and more or and button with three dots. At this point a little screen will appear. Does it say enable data for either one? If so, press that one to enable. If not, back out completely. Hope that helps.

I'm with Smilie. I've had a Droid Eris since June and it's the worst phone ever.

I'll start by saying the ability to have apps is very cool and usually my apps work great - facebook, gmail, syncing with Outlook email and calendars and contacts, along with the other apps I've downloaded - they mostly work great and are cool.

The two things my phone will not do is make calls or send text messages. Which is great because that's the two most important things a phone does... The screen lag time is awful. Sometimes it can take 2-3 minutes to place a call because of the lags. I'll hit the phone button and it'll take a few seconds to open the dialer. Then I start searching for someone's name and it takes several (maybe up to 30) seconds to find anyone. But then their name doesn't appear at the top right away - sometimes it can take up to a minute. Then half the time, when you click a name, it doesn't actually start a call. The other half of the time, it does start a call, but with the wrong person because you've pressed on the person in the top position, but it hadn't finished loading after forever, and then it does and places the call and you've actually called the wrong person... It took me a good month to figure out how to not keep calling the wrong person - the trick is to wait a really long time. Even short cuts and speed dials don't work quickly. If I ever needed to make an emergency call, I'd die before I was able to actually place a call.

Text messaging has the same problems. It takes forever to open the app, then takes even longer to search for someone's name, and then freezes - sometimes for several minutes - during creating the text.

I've also had it call people while I'm on the line.

And probably THE most single annoying thing it does is will not let me dismiss meeting reminders in the calendar app. It's very convenient and syncs with my Outlook calendar, but you have to catch it at just the right place for it to actually put the reminder in the status bar and let you dismiss it. Most times it just snoozes the reminder and disappears from the status bar and then you can't do anything other than deleting the meeting - because even deleting the reminder doesn't make it stop reminding. This is most awesome when my assistant puts her all day stuff on my calendar - so I start getting reminders at midnight that she's got mail duty the next day, and the reminders go off every 5 minutes, and I can't dismiss them...

I called Verizon and complained and they said they had no known issues about the serious lags, so they sent me a replacement phone. Which of course had the exact same problems, but even more fun - the replacement has a screwy track ball that glows constantly - regardless of whether there's a new alert, whether you've already checked the alert - anything. It glows all night long, all day long, all of the time - which makes it hard to sleep, but easier to find the phone in my purse! I called them again today and talked the rep into letting me upgrade to a Droid 2 without paying full retail price. I can NOT wait - hopefully I'll finally have all of the convenience of apps, with none of the lags or other problems. I'm fairly tech saavy, read the manual, went to forums and other help sites and did research so this is NOT user error - this phone just sucks.

If you're thinking about buying a DROID Eris - DONT!! Spend the extra money and get a nicer DROID.

Not28 - scrolling all the way to the left and then freezing on the left most screen is the other thing my phone randomly does. I'll unlock the screen and it will go to the left most screen and won't let me move to any other screens. Sometimes it takes several hours to be able to get off of the far left screen.

The other annoying thing it's been doing lately is not letting me on the app market. I have an app that works for awhile and then says it's not connected to the internet (which it is) but I've read and that's an app compatibility issue - so I uninstall it and re-download and install it when it happens. Except when I try to get to the app market it says there is an error and wont let me connect - sometimes for days.... Even though I have full bars AND am connected to a wireless network. I tried disconnecting from the wireless network thinking it might be a firewall thing, but that doesn't make it connect either.

Bottom line - this phone is only good for using facebook and gmail and a couple of other apps. But don't buy it thinking you'll make a ton of calls or send text messages or use other DROID apps for more expensive phones....

Sounds like a bad apple.

I'm on several websites a day. No scrolling issues. Trackball is happy and works all directions. Not sure about the calling issue, but it brings up the phonebook fast enough for me. No dropped calls or hearing issues except for the people who mumble and I know a few of them that face to face conversations are hard. The few people I text are in my conversation list so I just select the person to add to the conversation. I don't use Facebook so it won't be on my phone either.

I have factory reset my phone twice. First time after 2.1 was loaded. BEST decision ever! Second time on Sunday just for the fun of it and to see if it would clear out "Dialer Storage". It did and I was up and running in two hours. All applications loaded, text messages restored and phone and calendar resynced in that time.

Since that went so smoothly, I am going to start thinking about the next step about how to get Froyo on this baby. Hehe.

I agree this phone is a joke I have had mine since 8/10 and have had nonthing but issues. The screen always freezes up when I'm tryin to dual a number when I'm typing or textinf the keyboard freezes up or all of a suddden the key board will disappear and what kind of smartphone doesn't come with a flash on it. I can keep a charge up to four hours. When ui had my blackberry curve which I &d for two yrs I had no such problems this phone is a nuisance and I will be glad when I'm able to purchase another brand of phone. I absolutely hate this phone I had it swapped out two weeks ago and I'm still having the same problems I miss the convience of my blackberry curve I would not eecommens this high priced piece of junk to anyone

I agree. I have had so many problems that I am thinking of going to ATT so I can get an I phone. I need a phone that actually works. For what I pay i can get an I phone that actually works.

Give it about 6 months then you will change your mind. I have two phones sent to me and both have ha nothing but problems. I am at the pont of switching carriers.

Could not agree more. I have been a long time Verizon customer and for the most part a satisfied one. I got the Eris just under a year ago and it was fantastic...until I installed the update. I could spend a few hours listing all the problems I have had with this phone (my 2nd Eris).

Basically the lag is horrendous. One person put it perfectly in another thread: If I ever had to use this phone in a life or death situation, well I'd be dead.

My first Eris had all the problems everyone else is experiencing. Scrolling, call lag, screen goes black, phone freezes, text lag, etc. etc. They gave me a second Eris and every single problem still exists minus the scrolling (thank you God).

Long story short, the utter dissatisfaction I have experienced with both this phone and the customer service I have received from Verizon have me on the verge of switching carriers as soon as my contract is up. (The great part about that is that both of my sisters have the same phone with the same problems so they will probably be joining me in my venture.) For the customer service people at the store to look me in the face and act like they had no idea what I was talking about was basically a slap in the face. Then I pulled out the PAGES of forum posts I printed out about the problems people were experiencing and all they would do for me is give me the exact same phone with the update already installed... lol.

Sorry Verizon. You dropped the ball.

Here are some steps that you can try:

Step 1 – Soft reset the device

-Power the device off

-Pull the battery out of 20 seconds

-Place the battery back in

-Power the device back on

Step 2 – Update the device

-Dial *228 send

-Press option 1 once the automated system prompts

-Wait approximately 45 seconds for programming to complete.

Step 3 – Ensure the device has the latest update.

-Press Menu

-Select Settings

-Select About phone

Step 4 – Check for updates
