Activation fee vs Upgrade fee.

I know this has probably been answered but when i searched i couldn't find anything useful, that or i didn't look hard enough. Anyway, I was wondering what the two fees were.

Say I made a new line, would i only pay the activation fee, and is there a way to get the fee waived?

I want to know to figure out if i'd rather upgrade my current line or just make a new line because of the upgrade fee. Thanks.

An Activation fee applies when starting a new line of service - it's $35. There are deals from time to time where the fee is waived, weekend special kind of deal or special promo from a third party vendor advertising NO Activation Fee!

The relatively new Upgrade fee applies when you are purchasing a new phone on an existing line of service, and using the eligible upgrade to get the phone at a discount. That fee is $30.

If you add a line, you'll pay $10/month for that line. If the line you are trying to avoid paying an upgrade fee on is still in contract, you'll end up paying for 2 lines when you really only need one (an extra $40), or paying the ETF which is going to be more than that. It ends up being an extra $1.50 or less per month when spread over the life of the contract.
