Personal Hotspot vs 3G Cellular

Tell me if I have this correct and if it makes sense.

I presently have an iPhone4. I am thinking of getting an iPad2. I want to have internet capability for the iPad2 when wifi is not avialable. Rather than pay $529 for an iPad2 with wifi and 3G cellular and have to pay ( I think it's $25 a month for data) ; why not just pay $399 for a wifi only iPad2 and then pay only $20 a month for a personal hotspot for my iPhone. Will that work ??

Yep that is exactly what I do now and have done for years.

I pay $20 a month for 2GB of data using my iphone as a hotspot. works great so far.

It's $20 total for hotspot with 2 GB data (in addition to whatever you are currently paying for your data plan) if you're on a tiered data plan. If you are on a Share Everything plan, the hotspot feature is included and draws data from your current data plan.

I am currently grandfathered and have an unlimited data plan that cost me nothing. I assume I still have to pay $20 for the hotspot anyway, is that correct ??

The $20 for 2 extra Gig is probably only good on the Nationwide plans which are tiered now and have been for at least 2 years and start at $30 for 2 Gig (w/o tethering). So if they say you have to upgrade to that to put tethring on, you will pay $50 for 4 gig, all of which can then be used either on the phone or tethering as you please. You might also consider upgrading to the Share Everything plan, which would have both you and your wife's phone on it and tethering would be included at no add'l charge, but that would still run you either $40 (iphone) + $30 (feature phone) + $50 for 1 Gig of data shared + UNL T&T. $120 for 2 phones sharing 1 Gig of data even with tethring/hotspot included is a fair chunk of change, which makes these plans so unattractive for many (including me) so the individual nationwide plan is quite a bargain compared to the Share Everything plan.

On my old old plan with no contracts I pay $30 for unlimited data plus $20 to use my iPhone as a hot spot for 2Gb of data per month. (I don't use it that often) My iPhone is my primary line in use, I also have 2 other droids (one for my wife and the other sits in a drawer as a spare) I pay for the nationwide 1400 minutes with unlimited text and video and unlimited data.

I also get a 19% discount on that $110.00 charge for the phone (primary) the phone has the add on of 2GB hotspot for $20 and taxes and surcharges. My other lines are $9.99 plus $30 for unlimited data and the same shared minutes with Friends and Family plus taxes and surcharges brings each line at $47.00 could be a little less change wise.

If you have the same plan or simular you can add that $20 2GB to your account. From the web at Verizon. However if it is more to add or it will result in losing any of the goodies you have now, don't do it.

You will be paying much more for less.
