So I've received 2 different answers by calling *611 in the last ten minutes and there are a whole bunch of conflicting answers all over the web about this, so I'm wondering if anyone has any definitive answer here.
I live in New York and am in Puerto Rico for work. When I landed and turned my phone back on the banner displayed 4 bars "EXTENDED" and no data indicator whatsoever. If I enable Data Roaming I get a 3G indicator.
From reading the descriptions on the Verizon site, I would have believed that EXTENDED is not the same as roaming, that you are in fact within part of a covered network and so I would expect not to incur roaming charges for using the phone. One customer service rep confirmed that if it switches to roaming I will receive charges but otherwise I would be OK. Another rep told me that if it doesn't say VERIZON then I am roaming and any data or calls will incur roaming charges and text messages will be paid for as I use them. She offered to set me up with an international data package of 100MB for $25. This doesn't sound right to me since PR is part of the US and the last time I was here (way back when) I had a Verizon flip phone and had no problems making calls and was not charged extra for it. As I alluded to earlier, discussions online around this topic are a little bit scattered and many are dated.
What's the deal with using Verizon wireless in Puerto Rico (San Juan area to be specific?). If it has any relevance, I'm using an iPhone 5.
