when i first purchased my droid, the salesperson at best buy struggled to open the battery door. i too struggled later until it became easier to remove.
it is possible that the person who set up the phone for you, assuming that you had someone set it up for you, could have caused a little damage.
if possible, go back and ask for a replacement. or you can buy a "new and improved" battery door (suppposedly it was re-did to fix the problem of the door constantly falling off) for $5.00
but, yeah you got a messed up one, go and exchange it.
I think you can actually get a replacement for free if you call customer service... I didn't find that out until I purchased a replacement for my lost cover for $5 or so. To be fair, it was over-nighted to me, and the new foam "tightener" that presses the cover outwards a little bit seems to give it just the slightest "stickiness" and has not yet come off again. The older cover, although it felt tight, had come off 3 or 4 times before it finally got lost. (I have the "open" snap-in holster from Verizon, so when the cover comes off, it's *gone* )
