Parental Controls - Purchase blocking

I was told when I set up my account that I could completely block purchases/downloads on my kids' phones with parental controls Service Blocking. Turns out this may not be the case as my son is purchaseing ringtones at will and there doesn't seem to be anythign I can do to block it. Any advice is appreciated. I am ready to cancel my account. Thanks

The problem in this situation is that even if you block application downloads on the account they can still download items if they already have an application that allows it. For example, if I download VZW Tones Deluxe (an app that provides access to Verizon's ringtone store) and then put a block on all downloads, I will still be able to use that app to download more tones. I will NOT, however, be able to download any more apps that would function the same way. So the solution to your problem is to make sure all applications on your son's phone are deleted so that he can no longer access them. The best way to do this is to take the phone to a store and have a rep go through it and make sure this is done.

ummm I may be wrong here but how abt you take your son's phone away end of issue.

Will they be able to do that if the apps were preloaded on the phone?

Perhaps, but I don't believe there are any preloaded apps that would give that kind of access. Was there a specific one you had a question about?

Where is he purchasing ringtones from? Verizon? A thrid party? Most ringtones are delivered via text message which would not involve a data transfer or download. And there are a lot of "freebies" out there too, in addition to making your own. Are there charges showing up on your bill from Get it Now for browsing and ringtone purchases? Or is he getting them from some other source?

Our account is brand new and there is nothing showing on the bill online yet. He has gone through the "get new ringtones" button on the ringtone menu. Not sure if anywhere else. I finally found someone at Verizon who seems to know what they are talking about. Need to call him with the phone in hand so he can walk me through (hopefully) what needs to be done.

Sounds like he may be using VZW Tones Deluxe, or some other ringtone store app. If you go to that portion of the menu and see anything listed there, just press the Options button and then choose either "cancel subscription" or "remove app." That should get rid of his access to the catalogue, and since you've already blocked app downloads, that should prevent him from racking up more charges.

You don't need to subscribe to Parental Controls to block purchases/downloads. If you log into your account online, there is a link that lets you choose what to block and unblock.
