Anyone know how to read the data usage details?

Has anyone figured this out?

I'm attempting to decipher the purported data usage of my devices, as listed by data and time. My devices often show lots of usage for times during which they were not only not being used (for example, 4 AM), but were also on my home wifi network.

Are the dates and times not intended to be accurate? Are they set for some far off, foreign time zone? This is particularly concerning, given Verizon's track record for 'accidentally' over-billing customers for data usage, as well as the numerous discussions on this board involving individuals who have tracked their data usage and found Verizon's estimate to be grossly inaccurate.

Well, I emailed Verizon about this. The response was basically that you cannot trust ANY of the times or dates associated with data usage, because they are often incorrect--sometimes by days. " The data reporting that is accessible to you via My Verizon may report differently than the original time and date because of this. In fact, the usage can be significantly delayed that you will find "unbilled usage" on the next statement."

But this should make you feel better!: "I can assure you that aside from the dates and times, the allowances are being measured appropriately."

Interestingly, Verizon reps have offered different explanations on this board for why a device might be registering lots of data usage at odd hours. One response I found suggested that a device that is "asleep" will not use the wifi connection it's on and will instead run lots of software "updates" and download lots of data over the cellular network. That makes perfect sense, right?

Verizon measures data within "data sessions." Theres are periods of time where the device is powered ON, cellular data ACTIVE and transmitting, actively or passively. If both wifi and are cellular data powered on the device or tablet, then cellular data will be used when a wifi connection is lost or interrupted. Of course, if the device is running overnight (wifi and data active) that could explain the weird 4 AM times, even if the device is not used actively at those hours. Most of the VZW billing systems are based off EST.

Great questions! I know how important it is to make sure that all billing charges are correct. I myself would not want to pay for something that I did not use. I want to help. The data usage is tracked in sessions, at the times when the usage started. I know that you are sleep at night. Is there items still connected to the Mifi at night? Like a computer, tablet, or phone? Keep in mind, that once a item has made an original connection to the mifi using your password, by memory most device will keep that connection and when in the range of the device will automatically connect. If a device is connected, then any data transmitted on the connected device will appear as an session on the mifi.. for example, if your cellphone is connected and receives an email in the middle of the night, the mifi connected to deliver that email. If you want to ensure no data connections are occuring overnight then I would recommend to completely power off the mifi when you have completed using the device at night. Keep me posted.
