Unlimited Data

Do you think that Verizon will end unlimited data for good or just do what ATT is doing? The are only allowing Unlimited data users to have 5GB of LTE and then placing them on 3G. I would much rather prefer that Verizon did this rather than totally getting rid of Unlimited data. What are your thoughts?\

I think most of us expect Verizon to do something July 2014 when the last of the new grandfathered unlimited data plans expire. Since they dropped them for customers upgrading to new subsidized phones, it's hard for me to see them doing anything different for the rest of us. I think it will depend on what the other major competitors are doing at the time. I would expect the Share Everything is it.

Well I think it's obvious that getting everyone on Share Everything is the end game. Verizon understandable doesn't want to have 2 different billing systems. Since unlimited data is not part of Share Everything it's also obvious they will have to get rid of it eventually. The logical time would be anytime after June 28th 2014.

I hope they do. I think they should greatly simplify their product offerings so that customers don't get so confused.

Even thought ATT has had Unlimited Data for all these years? Verizon would be the first to actually totally get rid of unlimited data? I know Verizon isn't ATT but i would still like to retain my unlimited data even though i may not use a lot of data but it gives me a piece of mind and it is certainly a lot cheeper than a shared everything plan.

Considering Verizon had 72% of all new customers additions in the last quarter I doubt they are worried. At&t on the otherhand..........

I just hope that by 2014 there will be so little unlimited customers left that Verizon won't go through the hassle to get everyone off. I really think they should just kick the people who just out right abuse it and let people who have moderate use with their unlimited data stay on it. (By moderate I mean people who don't use 50GB a month which is unbeleivable!)

Can you imagine where that would put high-end users? I mean, if someone uses 10+ GB in a bill cycle, that's awesome use of the unlimited data! Anything else covering that amount of data is super pricey by comparison. Bad business move to punish customers who use what they pay for. I think Verizon would be better off offering something like a promotion or incentive for customers to jump off unlimited data toward Share Everything, like a monthly discount promo.

We don't need an incentive. Customers who use over 10GB of data on unlimited data plans are abusing the system. They need to move to cable or U-Verse. Verizon needs to discontinue unlimited in July 2014. I say that as a customer who still has unlimited data and unlimited hotspot.

A) It's not bad business. What IS bad business is having a few people ruing it for everyone else. If you have 500 customers in an area and 5 are using most of the data making it worse for the other 495 then you do what will keep the other 495 happy.

I agree with the incentives to move people to Share Everything, but right now they already have 23% on Share Everything in just 6 months. As long as that keeps up I don't Verizon will feel the need to use incentives. Also I doubt incentives would work for most people on unlimited. Those people want to hold onto that. Heck many are willing to pay $400 extra for a phone to keep it. That's like $20 a month if you average that out over a normal 20 month upgrade cycle. So I can't see what Verizon could offer to get them to switch.

Hey everyone. So i'm eligible for an upgrade.. but I would lose my unlimited data... i read that online some people are even seling their unlimited data for as much as $700...

Anyway, should i just lose my unlimited data and renew my contract.. or buy a phone at retail price ($700) and keep my unlimited data...? If it seems to be that Verizon will get rid of unlimited users in the (near) future anyway?...

Oh and i looked carefully at my usage and I average about 1.8gb of data a month.. but of course, if i upgrade to a better phone (right now i have a old incredible 2), i would think I would be using more data....

If you were me, what would you do?

Any input would be appreciated. thanks... i didn't want to start a new thread bc of everyone actively posting re: unlimited data here.. sorry if i offend... thanks

Incentives will move only a handful of customers who don't really need or use much data. Customers who use over 5GB (or some number?) are not going to move to Share Everything for some incentives. The way to get rid of unlimited is get rid of it or raise the price substantially. If they truly cannot support customers using large amounts of data, they need to drop the unlimited plan.

Average is one thing, but actual usage may be something else. For instance, I average 4GB, but range from less than 2GB up to 10GB some months, when I travel. It's possible 2GB would be enough, but with highs and lows, you might need 4GB. You need to look at that, then run the numbers based on a tiered data plan of 2GB for $30 or 5GB for $50 or a Share Everything plan of 1GB for $50, 2GB for $60, 4GB for $70. Also, with the Share Everything plan you get free tethering/hotspot if that's of interest to you. With unlimited data, you have to pay $30 for unlimited tethering/hotspot or $20 for 2GB. That's in addition to your data plan. If you go with a tiered data plan, you can purchase the tethering/hotspot feature from Verizon or use a 3rd party app if you can find one that works.

Having written all of this, If I was you, I would be inclined to keep my current voice and text plan and switch to a tiered data plan of 5GB for $50. That would be an increase in price of $20 per month versus your current plan, but would get you a new phone for $200 instead of $650, for example. After watching your data usage for a few months, you could cut back to 2GB for $30 or switch to Share Everything and 2GB for $60. Sorry if this is a little confusing, because it is.

It would depend on what reasons you "think" you would use more data and "how much" more data you would use.

Keep in mind that you receive a $400+ incentive on the price of your phone to sign a contract. If you spread that out over the 2yr length of your contract, that comes close to $20/month. If you go with a 2 GB plan for $30/month, you would have to exceed your data allowance by 2 GB EVERY month before you would spend more than you would if you were to pay full retail for the phone. That is DOUBLE your average data use.

As I said previously, it would depend on the probability that you would actually use more data with a newer phone. I recently upgraded back in December and have found my data usage has not changed at all with my newer phone(s). I upgraded from a Droid X and currently switch back and forth from a Droid Razr Maxx HD and a Galaxy S3.

For what its worth, I wouldn't lose any sleep over no more unlimited data. I consider myself a heavy user, and I rarely go over 1.5gb data used per month. I have wifi at work and at home, and use wifi over 4g because its faster, and more stable (for the most part).

Like several said earlier in this post, there are a few people that are abusing the system and everyone else is paying for it I am not sure how people can use 10+ gb of data. Unless you are using netflix and pandora 24x7. Those people need to live a little, and put their phone down for a while!

i agree. i guess my battery life on even the newest, most advanced phone would die before i get close to racking up 10+gb. i just hate the idea of being "limited." Still having "unlimited" makes me feel extraordinary. When im on the couch and feeling lazy id rather look something up on my phone rather than grab my laptop. LOL. i'ts crazy how much we seem to cater our lifestyles around the smartphones. Thank you ALL FOR INPUT. I'll upgrade, keep an eye on my usage and use wifi or laptop when i can.

When I am on the couch and look something on my phone because I am lazy, I am utilizing wifi and do not have any usage against my data allowance.

Of course for $20 more they could get a 5 GB plan and then they wouldn't go over.

Yes, if you want to ASSURE you would spend more money. I don't necessarily like to guarantee that I will spend more money. Going with the 2 GB plan would mean a savings UNLESS they were to MORE THAN DOUBLE their data usage.

Yeah I use wi-fi whenever I can. Why not? I have 30 Mbps at home. That's better than what I'd get over 4G anyway and I save against my data. Even if I had unlimited there would be lots of time I'd prefer wi-fi over 4G. Some people you tell them about using wi-fi instead and it's like dirty word to them. It's like they insist their phone use mobile data.

Ha ha you know you are right on with the wifi. I use it at home, I use it at my wifes work place and so does she, and at the car place, at a restaurant we frequent so even with unlimited data on all three lines we use very little. But you will have to pry unlimited out of my cold dead fingers just knowing I have it makes us happy. If it changes in the future I will deal with verizon then.

Well I am now in a month to month contract on the Droid X. If I buy a 4G lte phone at full price will I be able to get 4G unlimited data without signing a contract?

There is no difference in 3G vs 4G. You just have to have a 4G phone and be somewhere that Verizon broadcast a 4G signal. You cannot get unlimited data unless you already have it. If you currently have unlimited data, you can keep if for now, if you pay full retail price for your new phone.

That's a joke. Even if T-mobile had LTE in 100% of it's territory over 1/3 of Americans still couldn't get t-mobile service. And Sorry their "unlimited" data is far from unlimited. Try reading the fine print.

No offense intended but I wish I had better assurances that I could KEEP my unlimited data plan with an iPhone 4 after buying a 4G phone on eBay.

Iphone 4 isn't a 4G phone. I'd say there a 99.9% chance that you will be able to keep it until at least the end of June 2014. After that who knows.

No offense? Why would I be offended? I don't care if you believe me or not. Contact Verizon and ask them. But, there are not guarantees. Verizon could end unlimited data for all of us tomorrow.

Your forgetting that Verizon sold you a product. You paid for it, and now your asking them to take it back? That makes no sense, however maybe you have bought into the idea that they do not have enough money to provide better backbone services and build out more towers to provide increased radio availability. Verizon can afford to provide everyone unlimited data. However the problem is they have determined that people do not make phone calls anymore. At least not like they used to, so what exactly are they selling? You cannot sell minutes anymore, they know this, so the only way to make more money and increase those share holder profits is to change the business model. Ok, I do not necessarily disagree with that. What I do disagree with is taking back something I paid for, the entirety of my reason for even signing up with Verizon is I know their network is the best and they had a unlimited data plan I thought I could believe in. Now I have to buy a phone full price just to keep my Unlimited Data. So I got my Samsung Galaxy S IV for like 700$, I removed text and Picture/video messages and use Google voice for all my texting. Now I pay 62$ a month for my phone service with unlimited data. The money I am saving over tiered data plans will make it so the phone pays for itself. So did I really lose 700$ no. However Verizon will probably pull a stunt and have the last laugh. The moment they rip my unlimited data from me I will go to whatever lengths necessary to make sure they understand that what they are doing is unfair and unwarranted.

Looking at the money you would save by keeping your unlimited data and phone over two years, the 700$ for a phone will pay for itself. Especially if you are willing to give out a new number and use google voice for text messaging. I have a discount of 22% through the company I work for and I took text and picture messaging off my plan, I was paying about 82$ a month for unlimited data and 450 minutes with unlimited text and picture messaging. Now I only pay 62$ a month. over 20 months that is 400$ saved that is not counting the money being save from the increased cost of a tiered data plan if I had switched. which would probably equal the price of the phone.

Now if they remove our unlimited data all together we should all rise up and sue Verizon wireless.

I will be so angry if they just rip my unlimited data away from me.
