Temporary phone swap

I sometimes go out on the water(boating,jet skiing, etc....) My question is if it is possible to use the My Verizon website to temporarily swap to a old phone that I am not going to worry about getting water damage. I have a iPhone 5 and would activate a old basic phone I have. Can this be done for a day or so without having to change plans or anything else?

No. Changing from a smartphone to a basic phone will cause a feature change in the data plan.

What kind of plan do you have?

Changing to a basic phone will create data plan changes, voicemail change, and deactivation of the SIM card at a minimum. There might be other things that change too depending on if they have the Nationwide plan or the Share Everything plan as well as if they have the old unlimited data plan or an individual tiered data plan.

I have some old Samsung flip phone. That's unfortunate. I had AT&T and used to SIM swap before I would go out on the boat and it would work fine without changing my plan/features.

I can't believe that just switching a sim card between phones would cause all those changes. That never happened to me when I was at TMobile. Can't you just take the sim card, put it in the other phone (and as long as its a Verizon phone) be good to go?

Not on Verizon 'cause basic phones don't have SIM cards. Also, data plans for basic phones are different than those for smartphones (coded differently in the system), and the voicemail system is different for iPhones.

I called Verizon regarding this and the rep said that it can be done and will not change anything in the plan......but who knows.

Then it is most likely you did not explain the situation completely to the Verizon rep.

First of all, different types of phones are charged at different rates. For example, you say you want to switch between an iPhone 5 and an "old basic phone" you have. Regardless of the plan you have in place, these 2 phones are charged differently. On one of the old Nationwide plans, you would have a data plan with the iPhone 5 and no data plan with the "old basic phone. This would change something in the plan, pricewise, when making this switch. With the Share Everything plan, the iPhone 5 has a $40/month access fee while the "old basic phone" has a $30/month access fee.

While your overall "plan" may not change, parts of your plan would change adding several lines to your bill. If you are unwilling to closely look at your bill when you receive it, I am sure you will be back complaining about it. For example making the switch for "a day or so" during your billing cycle with the Share Everything plan, you will most likely have 3 different access charges(1 full, 2 partial) for your line of service along with 2 partial refunds. You would have the original charge for your iPhone. You will then have a partial refund for the access fee on the iPhone when you switch out to the basic phone. You will have a partial access fee for the basic phone. You will then have a partial refund for the basic phone access fee when switching back to the iPhone. You will then have a partial access fee for the iPhone. While this should all add up to somewhere between $30 and $40 in total, I can understand how all of the extra lines with charges/refunds could tend to frighten you when you were told it would "not change anything in the plan". Monthly data allowances would not change as you can have the same allowance with either basic or smartphones.

Making the change on the old Nationwide plan, you could possibly see an even larger change in your bill depending on how evenly you use data throughout the month. When you make the change from smartphone to basic phone, your data usage would be pro-rated when starting/stopping your data plan. For example, if you make the change halfway thru your billing cycle but have used 3/4 of your data, you will be billed for a pro-rated overage when you change to a basic phone and drop your data plan as a result. Switching back to the smartphone, you will then have a pro-rated data allowance left for the remainder of the cycle. Even though you may not have used an amount of data over your "total" allowance for the entire billing cycle, you could still end up with an overage for the month.

Just be prepared to see a change in your bill if you do make this change even though you were told it "will not change anything in the plan".

To add to it, the voicemail system used for the iPhone is completely different and separate from the voicemail system used by the basic phone. Any saved voicemails would be lost when activating either phone. The user would then have to setup their voicemail after each activation. The

Yes you can. the other day a friend gave me an android phone. Since I travel a lot i rather take a cheap android phone instead of my iphone in case I loose it. I went to my local verizon to ask if it was possible to use my iphone's sim card on the android phone and the (removed) at the store just said no, you can't cause they use different size sim cards.

so i did a little research online and purchased a set of sim card adapter. I put my nano sim card from the iphone into the micro sim card adapter, put it in the android phone turned it on and VOILA!! It works like a charm. So don't believe verizon when they tell you that you can't do it. A set of sim cards adapters on amazon is between 2 and 10 dollars.
