No one knows, and you will recieve a notification telling you have recieved it and will be ready for download.
I found a blurb online somewhere that the new OS was going to drop on we Eris owners on Jan 20th. But as we all know, the internet can be a valuable source of B/S. By this time tomorrow, I'll know if it was good info or bad.

Slight correction Android 2.1
Yes, and other places cite either Jan 23 or Feb 23... To me, Jan 23 would make more sense - Simply because it's a Friday when network usage is at a minimum, and they have all weekend to watch for problems as it begins pushing out, and business customers would be less inconvenienced if some bad problems do crop up. All the testing in the world doesn't prevent the occasional "oh 'drats' we messed up" from happening, especially with tens of thousands of users, all having customized their phones with different apps.
A word of warning, when the update DOES come out, if you want it right away, I suggest you go to the Market first, and see if there are any updates for your installed applications BEFORE you run the update from Verizon. This can help prevent a LOT of problems with force-closes and such on restart. 1.5 to 2.1 is a major update (some in the UI area, but more so in the underlying API's that the app developers write to.) and by cheking for updates before you update your O.S. you have a much better chance that any app that might have been incompatible with Android 2.1 has been updated to work with it now.
If you are NOT incredibly anxious to experience 2.1, I'd suggest waiting 2 or 3 days, check the forums here, and see how many people are having problems. (Like the Eris lock-up problems that suddenly surfaced after the MR1 update, but took a couple of days for users to start realizing there was a problem and start posting about it.)
Me, I like living on the edge and I also like the 2.1 experience so far, but am looking foward to the official release.
I'm hoping any changes to the UI will be insignificant, because I really like it as-is. It's the biggest reason I bought the Eris instead of the Droid. I will be PI$$ED if they screw up my virtual keyboard! I wonder if it's possible to roll-back the OS if for some reason one were to really hate the new OS??
