Cancelling Data Plan - Question

Can you cancel a data plan on a phone line that is still under contract?

My daughter broke her smart phone. I want to replace it with a 'dumb phone' therefore she will no longer need the data package.

She has a year left on her phone line contract.

The data plan on the contract is called an 'Upgrade Fee'.

Yes, you can activate the dumb phone and drop the data package. If she had unlimited data, it will be lost forever (i.e, if she gets a new smartphone, she'll have to choose a tiered data plan, such as $30 for 2 GB). If the contract is cancelled for any reason, the ETF will still be based on a smartphone since that's the phone that was purchased under contract (it's not based on what type phone is currently on the line).

If you activate the basic phone on her line, you can cancel the data for that line.

I am unsure what you mean by "The data plan on the contract is called an 'Upgrade Fee' ". Data should be listed as data on your bill, not an 'Upgrade Fee'. Verizon DOES charge a one time $30 upgrade fee when you purchase a new phone at a subsidized rate. This has nothing to do with the data a phone may or may not use, though.

Edit: If you are on the Share Everything plan, there is a minimum amount of data required for an account and cannot be cancelled. You could, however, lower your data allowance to reflect going from an iPhone to a basic phone.

Thank you to the community members for assisting tiredmomps! A data plan can be removed off of the line if a basic phone is placed on the line. Did you have insurance on that line? Actually if you drop unlimited data by moving to a basic phone you can still get it back as long as you add it back within 14 days. (Unless of course they got a new smartphone by signing a new 2 year contract on the line). After 14 days though then yes, it's definately gone forever.
