Using wi-fi on cruise ship with Thunderbolt

I am sure this question is posed ALL THE TIME, but I cannot find the proper answer.

I am a smartphone moron. I never use wi-fi because I have a good signal with 3- and 4G.

So is it possible to turn off everything else on my phone, buy an international data plan and use the onboard wi-fi? Or will my phone automatically start to sync? I don't want to text or call, just upload (and brag) pictures to social media.

Airplane mode will turn off all the radios to prevent accidentally using international voice, text and data. You can turn on the wifi connection while in airplane mode to allow you to connect to the local wifi hotspot.

Thank you sooooooo much. I had no idea how to do it. Most people want to text or call. I just wanted to use data with wi-fi. You have been extremely helpful.
