Converting one line of family plan to mobile hotspot

Can I do that?  I have an old 700 minute unlimited data shared family plan with two lines.  I'd like to convert one to a mobile hotspot but the chat person says that I can't.  I've read otherwise, so I'd like to know the real deal on it.  I know I have to purchase my own phones to keep the unlimited.  Can't I just buy a Verizon branded mobile hotspot and have them activate it on one of my lines?

You will have to split the two lines into two accounts.  One as an individual line from the remaining phone line and another to separate mobile broadband data plan.
