I'm traveling to the UK in a few months. Will my Galaxy S III work in the UK? Will I pay a fortune in roaming charges? Would it be smarter to buy a cheap cheap pay-as-you-go phone while I'm there?

If the Galaxy S3 has been updated to the most current OS version, it should be already unlocked for global GSM use. You will be able to get a local SIM card and local number while in the UK. If it is a short trip, then you might consider the global plan available from VZW, but please review the pricing to see if it is worth it.
