Remove a line?

My eleven-year-old daughter was approached by a pedophile online and as a result of the investigation, her Samsung Galaxy 3 is in police custody. Upon termination of the investigation, they have informed us that the phone will be destroyed because the creep sent her pictures. I am fine with this. However, is there a way to remove her line without incurring the ETF? She just got the phone in April of this year, and we aren't planning on getting her another one.

Why would they need to destroy the phone? A factory reset and a phone number change should remove the pictures and correspondence from the device.

Granted this might be their policy and can't be changed.

If you have insurance on the phone, you might want to look into seeing if this situation is covered by the insurance. Then you can get a replacement phone. I would suggest changing the phone number either way.

You can put a basic flip phone on the line for less than the S3 was costing ($30 if a Share Everything plan, $9.99 for a Family share line), and keep it for emergency only. Insurance will replace it with a like model, and in this situation, Verizon MAY waive the ETF. You'll probably need a statement from the police as to the destruction of the phone.

It seems to me that if the police will not give you that phone back (which seems very odd), then you should request that they compensate you for it or otherwise replace it for you.

Whether or not you would get Verizon to waive the ETF in this situation is doubtful, but you should CALL Customer Service to ask.
