I am looking to try to get my mother a new iPhone 5s for Christmas this year. We have gone to multiple Verizon retailers and have been informed that we are not eligible for an upgrade until November of 2014 at the earliest. I understand that I can still get an iPhone for her but I would have to pay full retail. Does this mean that I can buy any iPhone 5s or do I have to buy an iPhone 5s that is GSM unlocked? Please help as Cyber Monday is nearly over and Christmas nears!

You still have to buy a Verizon branded iPhone whether you pay full retail or not.

A "GSM unlocked" phone will not be able to be activated on Verizon.

Does this mean I have to go directly through Verizon to get it. I have been on the Apple website and when selecting the Verizon model, it just prompts me to see if I am eligible for an upgrade which I know I am not.

No. You don't have to go through Verizon. You can get it from Apple.

However, you can't use the "unlocked" phone from Apple.com on Verizon. You have to use the Verizon one.

Or go to an Apple store. Or a Verizon store.
