How do you disable startup processes in Android?

My battery goes in a couple hours, and often my phone freezes. When I looked at running applications there were tons of them: the Bible, Facebook, maps, and tons of other running applications. I can kill these from the applications window but have to do it each time the phone is on, and sometimes they restart anyway.

How can I keep these processes from starting up? Please don't tell me to uninstall because I still want the applications. I just don't want them running in the background so I want to keep them from starting up automatically, and instead have them run only when I want to use them.

I'm not aware of a way to keep processes from running at startup, unless particular apps have a setting to do that from within the app.

The best advice I've gotten is not to try to manage apps (killing them, etc.) manually, but let the operating system do it. It's counterintuitive for Windows users, but Android is built to manage memory by pre-loading the most-needed apps. It learns what gets used and then loads it. Some apps, like Facebook, I suppose, may need to have background components running to be used in their normal way. When the user kills apps manually, the result, as you've noted, is often that the OS just reloads them, and you use more battery in the end.

I'm a hands-on guy, and it took me awhile to get used to letting things be. But I've been happier since I did. :smileyhappy:

Do you know why my battery lasts only about 3 hours now? I have the display off

most of the time, and just use 3G. I have a Samsung Charge. It also freezes

often and I need to reboot.

It can depend on how your phone is receiving the Tower if it has to constantly reconnect with it) It will use more battery in do that have have you tried Connecting to Wi-Fi you might try it over connecting to the Network you might see an increase in your Battery Life.. b33

Try a system cache clear every so often - you won't lose any data or settings, but, like with a computer, it acts as a reboot to clear memory and it seems to make my Droid 4 run better for a couple of weeks. If it starts getting slow to react or acting strangely, I run a system cache clear again.

Power down phone

Hold volume up/down & power simultaneously until you see the Boot Mode Selection Menu

Use volume down to navigate to 'Recovery', use volume up to select

Should see screen with triangle and exclamation point next to an Android

Press volume up/down simultaneously to go into system recovery

Use volume rocker to navigate to 'wipe cache' and use power button to select

Once finished, use volume rocker to navigate to 'reboot system now' and use power button to select

As @Dave-in-Decatur said, Android manages the apps and you need to train yourself to let the phone do what it's built to do. When I first got mine, coming from BlackBerry, I had a hard time "letting it be" - I kept wanting shut things down. But Android does better when left to run itself. And do a system cache clear if it starts acting up.

How old is the battery?

What makes you think if an app was not "running", it would save you some battery usage? In fact, what is the definition of an app "running" to you?

somethings running down the batterIES very quickly. Phone says it is display but

most of the time the display is blank. So not sure what else it could be except maybe

the cache that someone mentioned.
