HTC Eris freezing on lock screen

I have seen this posted on other forums but not here and no real solutions yet. I know about the unlock swipe is different with the OTA upgrade, that is NOT what I am talking about.

I received a txt and went to check it but the phone was completely frozen. Screen stayed on, clock didn't change, no buttons worked. I had to remove the battery to get the phone working again.

Anyone else have this problem? Do you know if Verizon is working on it?

I had this problem too. It didn't seem related to a text message though. I know I was going into an area that has really bad coverage. Maybe there is a problem with android and background processes losing the network and then crashing the phone? That's my best guess. It doesn't seem to happen that often. I am hoping this gets taken care of in future updates (c'mon 2.0)

My daughter's Eris started doing this Sunday morning, shortly after she applied the OTA update.

I did a full factory reset of the device, formatted the SD card, and only installed a few apps (none of which she had on BEFORE I did the full reset.) I thought I had the problem fixed, but about 20 minutes later, after putting it to sleep, and waking it up a few dozen times, it locked up solid again on me.

While I called tech support and was speaking to them, 10 minutes had passed, the screen was still on, the clock had still not updated.

I spoke with tech support for a while, told them what I had already done to the phone, and she checked her records for similar problems. She said the problems did not appear to be wide-spread (I took that as meaning at least a few other people had reported the same problem.) and at the moment they were treating it as a possible hardware problem on a limited number of phones.

She advised me to return the unit for a replacement.

I haven't had a chance to do this yet, and it locked up on her once again yesterday in the evening.

It is definitely not related to signal strenght, as I had 3 of 4 bars when it happned to me, no text messages, no emails, no phone calls happening at the moment it locked.

I'm thinking it is *not* hardware related, and since it's awfully intermittent that it's probably more wide-spread than has yet to be reported. If too many people are coming from windows mobile devices or blackberry, they might just be assuming that daily lockups are the norm for every smart phone and just haven't called in to tech support yet to complain.

I was holding off on making a 100 mile round-trip and having to deal with worst-buy if I could avoid it, plus her phone was actually new and not a returned phone that worst-buy re-packaged as a new device.

I thing this is more of a problem then support seems to think. I saw a bunch of people reporting this on other forums but figured Verizon might monitor this forum. I think that a lot of people are working on finding a solution online and not sitting on hold with Verizon support. If it happens to me again I will call or head into support.

Like I was originally thinking... I am now thinking even more that it's a software problem, due to the changes in the unlock screen code/behavior. Some bad piece of code is causing the problem.

The problem (from the standpoint of us end-users) is that not enough people have experienced the problem frequently enough to call into tech support. For example my daughter, having had a blackberry that would frequently require a battery pull to get things working again, just happened to mention to me off-hand that it had locked up, and she had hoped a new phone wouldn't be giving her the same problems as her old perl did. That's when I started playing with it myself and it locked up on me, did the factory reset, and was able to get it to lock up again, so I knew it wasn't an issue with one of her apps she had installed.

I think I'll just hold off on returning the phone and see if a software fix can be obtained, besides the "people" at worst-buy seem absolutely bonkers about wanting to apply the newest firmware to a phone before you leave the store. When I got my 2nd Droid I wanted to play with it on the old firmware for a day or two, just to see what improved and the sales-droid insisted on updating the firmware on the darn thing.

Does anyone know if anyone has the original ROM anywhere that can be flashed to put the phone back to the original build?

I've just experienced this problem too. Hopefully it will correct itself once the battery's run down?

As I'm aware, the inital file that rooted the device was on Android 2.0. So that means using that same file to root the phone will probably down-grade it to the older firmware.

At least that's the way it worked on the MyTouch/G1.

Same issue here - It's happened about six times since the OTA update. Never before.

I was talking about the original ROM for the Eris, not the Moto Droid. Problem has been solved, for my daughter's Eris, though. We returned the phone, got a new one, and she is just avoiding the update for the time being.

i HAVE HADMY ERIS SINCE DECEMBER 26 AND TWICE IT HAS LOCKED UP COMPLETELY WHEN I AM RECEIVING A TEXT. THE ONLY SOLUTION WAS TO REMOVE THE BATTERY BOTH TIMES. AM NOT RECEIVING ANY SUPPORT FROM VERIZON ON THIS ISSUE.
